West Morgan winner in Marx Optical Tourney

West Morgan’s Rebels came out on top in all three games they played and emerged as the winner in the Marx Optical Thanksgiving Classic at Priceville High School on Nov. 21 and 23.

They eeked out an 82-81 decision over West Limestone on the first day of action and came back two days later to defeat Lawrence County High School, 87-67, and Brindlee Mountain, 77-37.

Priceville’s Bulldogs (3-3) edged out Danville, Lawrence County and Brewer for second place by virtue of allowing the fewest number of points to its three opponents. All four teams won two games while losing one. Danville’s Hawks came in third while LCHS and Brewer tied for fourth.

The host Bulldogs wrapped up the tournament on Friday night in a game with West Limestone, losing by a score of 56-64.

The Bulldogs had the game going their way through the third quarter, leading 11-5 after one period, 25-20 at halftime and 41-32 after three periods. But West Limestone rallied in the final period, grabbing a 52-51 lead with 3:22 left in the game.

Luke Mason paced the Bulldogs with 25 points. Chandler Livingston had eight points.

“We played well early in the game but weren’t able to finish strong,” said head coach Darrell Haynes. “Playing two games the same day could’ve had something to do with that.

“I’m pleased with how they played overall,” he added. “They have shown improvement since the season started.”

“It was a very competitive tournament,” Haynes pointed out. “Most of the games were decided by 10 points or less and the fans got to see lots of good basketball.”
