A look back to Nov. 21-27, 1962

Nov. 21, 1962 – MCHS, MCTS, Hartselle Elementary, and Crestline dismissed for the Thanksgiving holidays this afternoon. School will resume on the 24th.

Nov. 21, 1962 – Ray Wilson, enjoying a Thanksgiving holiday hunt in the Bankhead Forest, was killed tragically when his companion slipped while going up an embankment, causing his shotgun to accidentally discharge and fatally strike Ray.

Nov. 21, 1962 – A fire at the Rogers store on South McGough Street today did minimal damage since it was quickly put out by Hartselle firefighters.

Nov. 21, 1962 – Hartselle gospel music fans made a beeline for the Lawrence County coliseum in Moulton tonight for a big all-night singing. Featured performers included impresario Wally Fowler, the Chuckwagon Gang, Wendy Bagwell and the Sunlighters, Calvin Newton and the Sons of Song, and the Florida

Boys.

Nov. 22, 1962 – Larry Wallace and Ronnie and Ronald Sparkman, all enrolled at Florence State, are among the many Hartselle area college students spending the Thanksgiving holidays with homefolks.

Nov. 22, 1962 – A sumptuous turkey dinner with all the trimmings was served to prisoners in the Morgan County jail today by Sheriff Knox McRae and his deputies in celebration of Thanksgiving.

Nov. 22, 1962 – Jerry Atkins, an MCHS grad who is currently a BMOC at Alabama College, has been put up for “Mr. A.C.” at the school.

Nov. 23, 1962 – Contractor Virgil Bailey is currently building a new warehouse on Chestnut Street. State Construction has a six-room brick veneer home in progress in Enslen Circle. State is also erecting a home of the same size on Enslen Street. Another contractor, M. M. Patterson has a home underway on Elm Street.

Nov. 23, 1962 – The White House has confirmed a report that President Kennedy gives the entirety of his annual salary of $100,000 to charity each year.

Nov. 24, 1962 – Byrd Vest, 77, a resident of Hartselle 3, died at home early this morning. The Rev. Vandon Windsor will preach his funeral Sunday at 2. In addition to the widow, Mr. Vest is survived by two daughters, four sons, 22 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren.

Nov. 25, 1962 – Catholics around the world today commemorated the birthday of Pope John XXIII. The beloved religious leader was born on this date 81 years ago at Sotto il Monte, Italy, as Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, to a family of sharecroppers.

Nov. 25, 1962 – The Morgan County Fox Hunters Association lost one of its most dedicated members today when Jim Morris, 62, a resident of Danville 2, passed away at home. The funeral will be Tuesday morning at McKendree. Members of the hunting group will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Nov. 26, 1962 – A.1c Rayburn Hill, whose parents live on Hartselle 4, is now stationed at North Bend Air Force Station in Oregon.

Nov. 27, 1962 – The budget for 1963 was the main topic considered by the Hartselle City Council at its meeting tonight. After lengthy discussions, a budget in the amount of $177,130 was approved by the council. Instead of an anticipated deficit requiring higher taxes, the budget actually has a $1,556.56 surplus. Minor adjustments upward were made in business licenses but the impact on most citizens should be minimal or non-existent.

Nov. 27, 1962 – Jimmy Legg, who now lives in Chicago, is currently visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Legg, in Oak Ridge.

Nov. 27, 1962 – There was a party at the White House this afternoon as little Caroline Kennedy celebrated her fifth birthday. Her brother John-John had his second birthday just a couple of days ago and it was similarly celebrated.
