Authorities have released the name of the man shot and killed this afternoon on Pinehurst Street.

Jerry Wayne Cleek, 79, of Hartselle was arrested on murder charges and booked in the Morgan County Jail, with bond set at $100,000 according to authorities.

The victim was identified as Phillip Anthony Grigsby, 59. He was transported to Decatur Morgan Hospital by ambulance where he died from the gun shot at about 4:45 pm. An autopsy will be performed to obtain more information, authorities said. Cleek was questioned about the shooting and admitted to shooting Grigsby after an argument.

One man is dead and another is in custody after a shooting on Pinehurst Street this afternoon.

HPD Chief Justin Barley said the call came in around 3:20 p.m. Officers from Hartselle and the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office secured the scene while EMS personnel tried to save the victim’s life, but efforts were unsuccessful.

“We still have a lot to sort out before we know where everything is going, but (the investigation) is underway,” Barley said. “This is an isolated incident to this household. The shooter and victim are related so there is no threat to the community.”

The names of both the victim and the suspect are expected to be released tomorrow, Barley added, along with possible charges. “Whether it was self-defense or not, that is all to be determined,” he said.

The shooting took place at 2102 Pinehurst Street. Barley said central dispatch has pulled records to confirm prior calls. “I believe this is a house that we have been to before for disturbance calls,” he said. “These were people we were familiar with. It’s an unfortunate situation, no doubt, we will get to the bottom of it and there’s nothing for the public to be concerned about.”
