Falkville Library host Summer Reading Program

Falkville librarian Jenny Asherbranner welcomes everyone to participate in the summer reading program. The theme will be Universal Stories for this year’s program.

July 11 at 2 p.m., the kick-off will be story time in outer space, with registration and instructions on reading books during July. There will also be a chance for those interested to obtain a library card.

July 18 Melinda Hudson will read an adventure story on the outer space theme. There will also be crafts and time for checking books in and out.

July 25 Frances Rowe will tell a story about Mary Poppins and about her travels, popping in and out of space. There will also be reporting on reading, prizes and a chance to check out books. Everyone – children, parents and volunteers – will enjoy pizza, hotdogs, cookies and drinks.

If anyone has questions about the reading program, please call Jenny at 256-784-5822. Everyone is invited to attend and use the computers, get a library card or just enjoy reading a book in the comfortable reading nook.

Falkville resident attends Lifting Lives Academy of Country Music Camp

Vince Barrios is a member of the Falkville Planning Commission, and he also works with the VFW in Falkville on its special-needs projects. The VFW will have a fundraiser for its projects July 27.

Vince and his son David Barrios were in Nashville, Tenn., the weekend of June 20 to attend the special-needs camp at the Grand Ole Opry Complex, with emphasis on music. There are 30 people a year from around the world accepted, and this was David’s year.

The Academy of Country Music sponsors this camp for individuals with Williams syndrome. People with Williams syndrome tend to have a unique love and appreciation for music.

During the camp a song-writing session was led by members of Lady Antebellum, and they will practice their song and then record it in a Nashville studio. Next Tuesday, they will perform the song they wrote at the Grand Ole Opry.

So far David is doing good; he is making new friends and is exhausted by the end of the day.

McKendree United Methodist Church Events

The members of McKendree United Methodist Church honored the fathers attending the Sunday worship service at 10:45 a.m. June 16.

Tina Summerford prepared chess pies, packaged them and presented each of the fathers with a pie for Father’s Day.

Brother Darrell Mosely chose appropriate scriptures and songs for Father’s Day. The songs included “This is My Father’s World” and others during the worship service.

The McKendree Administrative Board is planning a summer meeting, and the congregation is attending a tabernacle revival service.

The family of the late Joe Summerford and Rhona Howell Summerford enjoyed a picnic meal at Smith Lake for Father’s Day June 16.

Falkville United Methodist Church Activities

Sixteen youth and Falkville United Methodist Church counselors Susan Smith and Matt and Jennifer Stringer enjoyed the pool party hosted by Dan and Debbie Higginbotham at their home.

The youth group met June 12 at 6 p.m. and enjoyed a swim and a pizza meal provided by the church for the youth program.

The Falkville United Methodist Church members and the community are very proud of their young people.
