Falkville Utilities workers are completing the replacement of a two-inch water main with a six-inch main on Culver Loop Road, Mayor Ken Winkles reported at a regular council meeting Feb. 5.

“We’ve completed the construction for the most part and will begin tying on customers next week,” he said. “The new main will improve service for 12 residential and two industrial customers.”

Winkles said the project is being financed as a capital improvement project.

Three resolutions were approved for the purchase of equipment needed for two new police patrol vehicles. They were for striping, $2,700; equipment, $12,426.80; and two computers; $6,724.

A pubic hearing was conducted without comments on a request from Victory Fellowship for the rezoning of its property from AG-1 to B-1. The request will be considered for adoption at the next regular meeting.

Other action items included:

  • Approved the purchase and installation of a float probe at the town’s primary sewage lift station at the high school from Shepherd Electric for $3,313.
  • Approved the purchase of a free-standing 24x120x14-feet building from Pigg Construction Co. for $18,254.
  • Approved an appropriation of $500 to the American Red Cross.
  • Approved the purchase of a utility printer for $937.50 and a server for $6,281.79.
  • Approved the appointment of Jonathan Chaney, Matt Stringer, Jay Reid, Shane Jackson and Courtney Cocke to Falkville Park and Recreation Board.
  • Approved employee training as follows: Jill Walling, court maintenance training, $408.93; Dawn Estes, Clerk Institute, $917.75; Kay Saint, administrative assistant training, $268.10; and Bonnie Thomson, court maintenance training, $209.

Councilman Alton Hill reported that two teams from Falkville youth basketball won championships at a recent county tournament sponsored by the Morgan County Youth Basketball League. The champions are the 8U boys and the 12U girls. Two other Falkville teams reached the finals and came to within a combined three points of winning championship trophies in their age divisions.
