Falkville Town Council approved an amended ordinance giving residents an extra day to place rubbish at the curbside for pickup and disposal at a regular meeting Jan. 3.

The new pickup days are Monday and Friday.

Items not eligible for pickup include garbage, automobile tires and hazardous materials.

The governing body also approved a contract for med flight service with AirMedCare at a cost of $4,395 per year.

The contract provides Falkville residents emergency air flight transportation to a hospital from anywhere in Morgan County at no cost. Residents also have the option of upgrading the service to cover transportation from any state where AirMedCare operates for $35 per year.

A preliminary plan to upgrade traffic movement, parking and eye appeal to town hall and adjacent businesses was discussed during a meeting of the Planning Commission, which preceded the council meeting.

Joey Hester, director of planning, and Christina Argo, planner, for the North Central Alabama Regional Council of Governments (NARCOG) explained the plan with a aid of drawings and receive input from the commission and members of the CDBG Planning Grant Committee.

If implemented, parking in front of town hall would change to make better use of existing space and streetscape features would be added.

A community meeting will be held in February at a time and place yet to be determined to discuss the downtown rehabilitation project.

The council acted on other agenda items as follows:

•Appointed Mayor Ken Winkles to fill the unexpired term of former Mayor Bob Ramey on the Morgan County Industrial Park and Economic Development Cooperative District, effective until May 16, 2020

•Appointed Josh Scott and Joel Schrenk to the Falkville Park & Recreation Board with both terms expiring Nov. 14, 2018

•Declared as surplus property volumes 15 and 17 of the outdated Code of Alabama 1975

•Approved the purchase of six IPADs for the use of the mayor and council members at the approximate cost of $3,928.34

•Approved a proclamation designating the week of Jan. 22-28 as Town of Falkville School Choice Week
