Shelton signs with Kennesaw State

Sydni Shelton completed one dream a couple of weeks ago in winning a state championship.

Last week, she is fulfilling another goal in her life by signing her letter of intent to play volleyball at Kennesaw State University.

Shelton picked Kennesaw State over other a number of universities because she loved the coaches and the academics.

“The coach is a lot like (Danville coach) Spencer (Cole),” she said. “They also have a good nursing program and that’s what I am planning to major in right now. Many of the schools never showed me a classroom during our visit, but I got to take a look at the program there and I really like it there.”

Shelton said the state championship stands out above the other moments during her illustrious career.

“It was a dream come true,” Shelton said. “We worked so hard to get that state championship. It was a lot of hard work, but it was worth it. I don’t think I’ve ever cried so much about anything in my life. Sometimes, I start crying just thinking about it.”

Shelton has high aspirations for her college teammates as well.

“I’m not sure if making the NCAA tournament is a goal for the team right now, but I want that to be a goal for us,” Shelton said.

Shelton had an outstanding career at Danville She compile 3,377 kills, 197 assists, 402 blocks, 1,612 digs and 314 aces.

This year alone, she had 786 kills, 22 assists, 60 blocks, 423 digs and 88 aces.

Shelton said she wouldn’t have been able to achieve that if it wasn’t for the support of her family and teammates.

“I’ve had a lot of great teammates over the years,” Shelton said. “There’s no way I would have been as successful without them.

“And my parents have dragged me around to practices for school and club teams, tournaments all over the Southeast. I don’t know how they were able to do all that they did for me.”
