Aquatic Center looks to finish strong third season

Hartselle Aquatic Center is having a good year in spite of a wetter than usual June and a milder than usual July.

Gate receipts through July 25 were $221,729 as compared to $234,025 at the end of August 2013, according to City Clerk/Controller Rita Lee.

“It‘s hard to tell if this year’s admission figures will top those of last year, but they probably will,” she pointed out. “We have receipts for 12 more regular season days and five weekends to be added.”

Pool manger Lacy Garnett reported that attendance has dropped some in recent days.

“Families are busy getting their children ready for back-to-school and the weather has been cooler than usual,” she pointed out. “That will change when hot temperatures return.

“Overall, we’ve had a good year,” she added. “I think we will surpass what we did in the first year.”

“One of the best things we did was to begin accepting credit cards on all purchases,” said parks and recreation director Frank Miller. “We’ve seen a substantial increase in concession and rental sales.”

He also attributed an increase in family pool passes to offering early purchases in December.

“To our surprise we had a large number of individuals buy passes to give as Christmas gifts,” he started. “That’s something we’ll do again this year.”

Garnett said the pool will close its regular season Aug. 6 and resume a Friday and Saturday schedule through Aug. 31.

Miller said he has a laundry of repairs to be made at the aquatic center before the 2015 season but does not yet know in what order the work will be done.

“There’s not much that can be done until the pool is shut down,” said Mayor Don Hall, “but the idea is to get the work done before cold weather.”
