WINFIELD – The Winfield Pirates took an early 14-0 lead and the Danville Hawks were never able to overcome it in a 35-6 region loss last Friday night in Winfield.

The offense struggled all night against a good Pirate defense. Danville’s Dallas McAbee scored the only touchdown for the Hawks on a nine-yard run to make the score 28-6 in favor of Winfield.

Winfield was led by running back Xavier McCollum. McCollum scored both of Winfield’s second half touchdowns on runs of two and 47 yards respectively. McCollum also scored on a four-yard run in the first half, helping the Pirates to a 21-0 halftime lead. Winfield’s other first half touchdowns came on a Jordan Hunt punt return and a 22-yard Mason Dean to Kyle Nixon touchdown pass.

The Danville Hawks will host Winston County in the Hawks home opener Friday night at Smith-Owens Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
