Morgan County advances in Majors

SELMA – Morgan County’s head coach Perry Freeman didn’t think his team hit the ball very well Thursday, but if that’s the case, things are looking good for his side.

Freeman’s bunch displayed solid starting pitching from James Vinton and timely hitting in a 10-4 win over South Eastern (Montgomery) at Bloch Park in game two of the Dixie Majors state championship in Selma.

“It was a good win,” Freeman said. “We did fair. We could have hit the ball a bit better, but our base running was good. We need to hit to win this tournament though.”

That bats weren’t a problem early in the game as Morgan County jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after the bottom half of the first two innings with a Joshua Freeman and Jacob Fields both scoring a pair of runs.

Morgan tacked on another in the bottom of the third inning to move to 6-0 before South Eastern was even able to get a base runner.

South Eastern tried to comeback in the top of the sixth, but were only able to muster three run, but Morgan County responded with three of their own to shut the door.’

“This is why we get to play at least two games,” South Eastern coach Steve Rodopoulous said. “We’ll try again tomorrow.”
