Alabama needs interlock law

Dear Editor,
I joined MADD in 1981 after my husband and two young sons were killed by a drunk driver. I was hospitalized for three weeks and eventually lost my house and job. All of these events had a devastating effect on my life.
I can’t bring my family back, but I can help save another. Pending before the Alabama Senate is House Bill 361, which requires DUI offenders to test their blood alcohol level before starting their cars. If the level is above 0.02, the vehicle will not start. Alabama is the only state in the nation without an interlock law. It’s time we enact this legislation to help limit the mixture of alcohol and automobiles.
Please call and/or write your state senator in support of HB 361. There are only two weeks left in the session, and Alabama families need the Senate to act before they go home for the year.

Become a MENTOR team member

Dear Editor,
May is National Foster Care Month, a perfect time to thank Alabama MENTOR Foster Parents for all they do everyday to safeguard the wellbeing of the children in their care. All of us at Alabama MENTOR truly appreciate your dedication to our youngest and most vulnerable citizens.
Through my work as a recruiter for Alabama MENTOR, I know how resilient the children we serve are. Foster children have an extraordinary capacity to overcome many challenges – but only if they have the support of a caring adult in their lives.
In our state alone there are over 6,000 children waiting for a caring adult to open their heart and home to a child in need. Foster parents are more than just caregivers, they are also teachers and role models.
There is perhaps no opportunity more rewarding than caring for a child in need. If you are interested in making a positive impact on the life of a child in Madison County, I would like to invite you to an Informational Meeting on Monday, June 6. We will begin at 6:30 p.m. and this meeting will take place at our office located at the address below.
If you would like more information, please call Kristina at (256) 774-2934. As a member of the Alabama MENTOR team, you’ll have access to training, resources and support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
