Uncle Herschel Way is council favorite

The road leading to Hartselle’s Cracker Barrel will bear the name of the uncle of the restaurant’s founder, a man considered to be the down-home chain’s goodwill ambassador.
Hartselle’s City Council has voted to name the road Uncle Hershel Way. The name was chosen from more than 170 entries, including such mouth-watering entries such as Biscuits and Jelly Lane, Corn Bread Alley, Dumpling Drive, Fried Okra Lane and Hush Puppy Boulevard. The top three finalists were Checker’s Court, Sunrise Pointe, and Uncle Hershel Road, which was changed to Uncle Hershel Way by the council. The winning entry was submitted by Carolyn Martin and Mary Edith Stewart.
Uncle Herschel is the name of a popular menu item at Cracker Barrel. The breakfast includes eggs, biscuits, hashbrowns, ham and more.  The name comes from Herschel McCartney, the real-life uncle of Cracker Barrel co-founder Dan Evins.
According to the company, McCartney served as the restaurant’s good will ambassador, spreading his philosophy of “Treat everyone as you’d like to be treated yourself. Be down to earth, humble, soft spoken, and wear a smile.”
McCartney died in 1998. A life-sized bronze statue featuring him sitting on a bench talking to a Cracker Barrel server is located outside the company’s headquarters in Lebannon, Tenn.
Construction is slated to begin soon on Hartselle’s restaurant. It is scheduled for a February opening.
