In a display of raw strength and determination, Jonathon McCleskey, a 2024 senior at Hartselle High, emerged as the undisputed champion at the Alabama’s Strongest Man competition held at The Hangout in Gulf Shores on Aug. 12. McCleskey’s performance saw him clinch first place in all events except one, securing his top position in the Teen division. 

The adrenaline-fueled event featured five challenges that pushed participants to their physical limits. The highlight of the competition was the log press ladder, a test of upper body strength and technique. Competitors faced four progressively heavier weights – 150-pound, 170-pound, 190-pound and 210-pound – with a time limit of 75 seconds for each weight.  

Another feat of strength came in the form of the axle deadlift for reps, where participants were tasked with lifting a 400-pound weight as many times as possible within a 60-second window. 

The iron Cross/fire hydrant/pylon carry medley added an element of agility to the competition. Competitors had to carry each of the three objects separately for a distance of 40-feet in the shortest time possible. 

True to the essence of strength competitions, the tug of war event tested both physical strength and teamwork. 

The stones over bar event required 175-pound and 215-pound stones to be lifted over a 52-inch bar as many times as possible in one minute.  

Despite his domination in the majority of events, McCleskey’s second-place finish in the odd object carry event did not deter his quest for victory. Completing the challenge in 33 seconds, he secured a first-place finish in the overall teen division.
