The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office will participate in the 2023 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics May 17.  

The local part of the national event will take place 9 a.m. May 17 beginning at the sheriff’s office.  

The largest public awareness vehicle and grass-roots fundraiser for Special Olympics, participants of the Torch Run are known as Guardians of the Flame. Members of law enforcement along Special Olympics athletes carry the Flame of Hope into the opening ceremonies of local competitions, and into Special Olympics state, provincial, national, regional and world games, according to the event website.  

Annually, more than 100,000 members of law enforcement carry the “Flame of Hope,” symbolizing courage and celebration of diversity uniting communities around the globe. 

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office invites law enforcement officers, support staff and members of the community who support these groups to participate in the event.  

There is no registration fee, but participants should purchase and wear the Torch Run t-shirt to be a part of the run, the sheriff’s office said. Participants are asked to arrive 30 minutes prior to run time to register and purchase a t-shirt.  

Sizes small through extra-large are $15; plus sizes cost $20. Proceeds support the Alabama Special Olympics.
