Nicky always feels at home in her school library. Instead of attending recess, she spends her time assisting Ms. Gillam with reshelving library books. Interacting with her classmates on the playground is not something she enjoys. However, when Ms. Gilliam goes to a conference for a week, she must attend recess with all the other kids. All alone reading poetry, Nicky is approached by a classmate who informs her that she also loves reading poetry. The dynamic and multidimensional artwork pairs well with the written in verse story of Nicky learning she might encounter things she doesn’t expect outside her world of books. Early and middle elementary students struggling to branch out socially will find this written verse picture book comforting. Also, the inclusion of the Dewey Decimal system categorized within the text provides readers with the opportunity to learn more about library nonfiction classification in a unique and memorable way.

Reading level: Picture book

Take a journey with Sweet Pea as they creatively try to avoid bedtime. Filled with vibrant colored pencil and watercolor digital art, this book will delight readers who love learning about different animals’ sleeping habits. Sweet Pea tells his mama that he could sleep cuddled up like a piglet or upside down like a bat. The Best Bed for Me is perfect for preschool age children because the artwork catches the eye, and the text is easy to understand.
