Recently, driving back from Decatur, nostalgia kicked in. I drove past Lowe’s and remembered the tall grassy field that used to be there. I passed Walmart and reminisced of the old location further down Highway 31. I passed Kroger and remembered the days as a teenager that I would to drive through the Kroger parking lot where all the pretty girls hung out. Were things better than they are now? Most likely not, but they were different. Sometimes we just want to go back to the “good ole days.”

As a Christian I think many of us have those moments. Moments when we remember our former lives, when things seemed much easier. It wasn’t better but all we can remember is that it was different. We create a false narrative in our minds that it wasn’t just different, it was better. Sometimes we fall for it and it causes us to fall back into old ways. The Bible warns us about this in the book of Ecclesiastes 7. “Do not say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For you do not inquire wisely concerning this.”

A verse like this reminds us it is not wise to have this frame of mind. So, the next time you go down memory lane and think that the good ole days might be better, just remember you’ve never had it as good as you do when you are a child of God.
