Historic Mt. Nebo Baptist Church is still active in the Massey Community

By Martha Jackson

Mt. Nebo Baptist Church was established in October 1869. The first church house burned and the existing church building was built in 1885. In its earlier days, the church house was used some of the time as a public school. In 1884 , the church had 87 members and paid their pastor $50 for that year. Additions and improvements to the church building have been made over the years, with the latest being in the sanctuary and the renovation was completed in November of 2022. Mt. Nebo Baptist Church is located at 860 Mt. Nebo Road in the rural Southwest area of Morgan County, in the Massey community.  Church member Allison Keenum and her husband, describe Mt. Nebo as “church 101”  with Sunday School, preaching and Bible study that comes from the Bible. Whether a song is old or new, if it is in the new Baptist Hymnal ‘we sing it,” the couple said. Allison Keenum said they have a Bible, pastor, a piano and a hymnbook and the congregation is like family, very caring and welcoming.

This year the church started back having church dinners again. They also implemented a fifth Sunday night hymn singing. They are also making plans for their Vacation Bible School next summer. They recently started a Blessings Box Ministry as well as different outreach programs and a Mini Library Ministry. Church members are looking forward to Christmas time at historic Mt. Nebo Church. The church is decorated and looks like a Christmas card.

Mt. Nebo Church has a range of members from young married couples, families with small children, from infant to high school age and also middle age adults. Mt. Nebo Church service times are Sunday School at 10 a.m., morning worship at 11 a.m., Sunday evening worship at 6 p.m. and Wednesday night prayer meeting and Bible Study at 6 p.m. Pastor Greg Compton invites everyone to attend their church services.
