Hartselle gets milestone wins over Springville, Muscle Shoals

HARTSELLE — The Hartselle Tigers saw two milestone wins over Springville and Muscle Shoals last weekend.

The first came in the Tigers’ 55-54 win over Springville that gave coach Faron Key his 150th win at Hartselle. He is third all-time in wins as the Hartselle head coach trailing Don Pouncy (172 wins) and Johnny Berry (165 wins.)

“When I came here, I wanted to build a program that competes for championships,” Key said. “The wins are special but how we compete every night is more important.”

The second came in Hartselle’s 62-49 win over Muscle Shoals when Kiah Key scored his 1,000th career point in the third quarter of the Tigers’ win. His 1,000th point came the same way he scored his first point, on a free throw. He is sixth on the Hartselle scoring list behind Brody Peebles, Boonie Russell, Zac Ward, Jay Knowlton and Sam Fleischman.

“It feels good to reach this point,” Kiah said. “Reaching the mark shows all the hard work has paid off.”

Hartselle 62, Muscle Shoals 49

The Tigers, who went 1-2 against Muscle Shoals last season, earned a bit of revenge with a 62-49 win over the visiting Trojans this past Saturday.

Hartselle jumped out to a 20-10 first-quarter lead and took a 31-20 lead into halftime. They extended their lead to 52-35 to end the third quarter. The Trojans made a couple of runs during the game to cut the Hartselle lead to five, but the Tigers answered those runs with runs of their own to pull away.

Kiah Key finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals and four assists to lead Hartselle. Ryan Dunn added 13 points, while Kohl Key and Thomas Itsede finished with 10 points each.

Markus Tapscott pulled down seven rebounds.

Luke Mosley scored 17 points for Muscle Shoals, while Cedric Summerhill scored 13.

Hartselle 55, Springville 54

The Tigers showed some rust after 10 days off, having not played since Nov. 22, in their 55-54 win over Springville.

Hartselle trailed in every quarter before getting a lead late in the fourth. Springville led 13-9 after the first quarter and 23-20 at halftime. The Tigers cut the lead to 39-37 heading into the fourth quarter.

Dunn led three Tigers in double figures with 15 points in the win. Kohl Key hit four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points, while Kiah Key added 10 points and seven rebounds. Itsede had seven points and nine rebounds.

Ayden Walton scored 18 points to lead Springville, while Ty Harrison added 16 points.
