Hartselle’s Mizell, Smith sign to play baseball with SEC schools

Hartselle baseball seniors Coleman “Bull” Mizell and Jack Smith signed their National Letters of Intent with the University of Alabama and the University of Arkansas in signing ceremonies at Hartselle High School this past week.

Mizell signs with Alabama

Outfielder Coleman Mizell capped off a memorable 2022 by signing with the University of Alabama baseball program this past Tuesday.

“It is a great feeling to sign with the University of Alabama,” Mizell said. “Not many people have the opportunity to play college baseball, especially in the SEC.”

His signing was the culmination of his 2022 as he became a state champion, was named to the 6A All-State team and was named the 6A Hitter of the Year.

He committed to the Crimson Tide almost two years ago and is glad to finally be able to sign his name on the dotted line.

But there is a possibility that Mizell never makes it to Tuscaloosa, as his name could be called in the upcoming Major League draft.

This summer, his stock rose after a nine-day stint at the Major League Baseball/ USA Baseball Prospect Development Camp in Cary, NC. He had a successful time at the camp and received a high prospect rating for his efforts in front of numerous MLB scouts.

“The end goal is to play professionally, but going through Tuscaloosa to get there means a lot to me,” Mizell added. “I’m incredibly thankful for the talent that God has given me to be able to play this sport. I absolutely love playing baseball and wouldn’t want to do it anywhere else but in Tuscaloosa.”

Smith signs with Arkansas

Pitcher Jack Smith signed his letter of intent to play baseball for the Arkansas Razorbacks following graduation.

“This is what I’ve worked my whole life for,” Smith said. “It’s an amazing feeling.”

Smith’s recruiting stock shot up with an outstanding performance at the Perfect Game High School Showcase in Hoover early in his junior season.

He was recruited by numerous SEC schools, including Auburn, Alabama and Tennessee.

“When I met with the Arkansas coaches and saw the facilities, I knew that’s where I would call home,” Smith said.

Smith played quarterback for the Hartselle Tigers football team, leading them to a 12-1 record this season and a trip to the 6A State Quarterfinals. He finished with over 2,200 yards passing with 18 touchdowns while rushing for over 500 yards and 12 touchdowns.

“Jack was a tremendous leader for the football program,” Hartselle head coach Bryan Moore said. “Arkansas is getting a guy with all of the intangibles you want in a player.”
