The Brewer Patriots went on the road and came away with a 27-21 win over East Limestone in 5A Region 8 play. It was the Patriots' first win away from Tucker Stadium since 2018, a span of 16 games. Their last win on the road was an 18-17 win over Ardmore on Oct. 4, 2018. “I am proud of how our team competed tonight,” Brewer head coach Matt Plunkett said. “Nobody in this program had won a game on the road before tonight. To get a win over a team we had never beat before makes it even more special.” Brewer jumped out in front late in the first quarter when quarterback Caden Childers ran 80 yards down the East Limestone sideline to give the Patriots a 7-0 lead with 3:08 remaining in the first quarter. The Patriots added to their lead, 14-0, when D.J. Burney connected with Childers for a 34-yard touchdown pass with 4:21 remaining in the half. Burney’s two-yard touchdown with 8:00 left in the third quarter gave Brewer its largest lead of the game at 21-0. East Limestone responded with 21 straight points to tie the game, the last seven coming with 1:47 left in the game. Childers hit Burney with a 42-yard touchdown pass to put the Patriots in front for good, 27-21, 1:11 left in the game. East Limestone had one final chance but Austyn Holmes picked off an Indians pass in the endzone as time expired. Brewer picked up the victory despite being outgained 356-281 in total yards. Childers finished 9-of-15 passing for 126 yards and a touchdown and led the team with 84 yards rushing and a touchdown. Burney was 1-of-1 for 34 yards and a touchdown passing and had four receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown. Will Clemons and Connor Kirby had 11 tackles each to lead the defensive effort. The defense finished with nine tackles for loss, a sack and an interception. Brewer (2-2, 1-1) will continue region play Lawrence County (1-3, 0-2) Friday.
