Brewer closes season with 35-6 win over Lawrence County

The Brewer Patriots closed out Matt Plunkett’s first season with a 35-6 win over Lawrence County Friday. The win was the Patriots’ second of the season.

Caden Childers got Brewer on the board first with a one-yard touchdown run. Lucas Simpson converted the two-point conversion to give the Patriots an 8-0 lead.

A couple of moments later, Lee Murray picked off a Lawrence County pass and returned it for a touchdown and a 15-0 lead.

The Red Devils cut the Brewer lead to 15-6 with a 15-yard touchdown pass with 1:10 left in the first quarter.

Childers added two more touchdown runs, a 3-yarder and a 1-yarder, to extend the Patriots’ lead to 28-6.

Brewer pushed the lead to 35-6 when Childers connected with DJ Burney for an 83-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

Childers finished 11 of 17 for 254 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 93 yards and three touchdowns. Walker Latham had 116 yards on seven catches. Lee Murray led the defensive effort with eight tackles and two Interceptions.

We built some momentum at the end of the season with the wins over Mae Jemison and Lawrence County,” said Plunkett.

The Patriots will return 97 percent of their offense next season. Childers, Burney, and Latham return to lead the offense.

“We got our work cut out for us, but I wholeheartedly believe we have a big future in front of our team,” Plunkett said.
