Summertime is the most fun time of the year for many, filled with beach trips, camps, pools and no school! For many churches, this time of year is also fun because of VBS – Vacation Bible School.

That’s right: Smack dab in the middle of fun times, a lot of churches put on a volunteer-run Bible school.

Many people might ask, why? Why, in the middle of vacation season, would people want to go to school?

Here is the answer: Summer is the perfect time! It’s a time when we have so many activities and things we want to do, we often neglect our time with God because we are busy with so many things.

It’s a perfect time to have a special week set aside to learn and renew our relationship with God and His people. The Bible teaches us to always be trying to gain godly knowledge. In 2 Peter 3:18 it says, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.”

We are also told to take the opportunities to be with one another when they present themselves. Hebrews 10:25 says we should keep each other in mind, “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”

VBS accomplishes both of these commands and so much more!

So yes, right in the middle of vacation season, going to Bible school is a great thing. Let’s take a vacation from vacations and grow together toward God. Have you considered attending VBS?
