Where do you get your morals?

By Todd Barrier

Recently I heard a sermon about moral authority. The premise was that if there was no God, there would be no standard for moral authority.

This is spot on.

If you don’t have God to gauge your moral compass, how do you develop morals? Many people use many different ways, and none of them are a good guide.

Some use their feelings, but the Bible tells us this isn’t a good guide (Prov. 14:12).

Others use their conscience, but we know that isn’t a good way either. Paul said his conscience was clear when persecuting the church (Acts 26:9-11). As one of my students said, a conscience can be corrupted.

People use these and many other ways to develop their morals. The thing they all have in common is that any of these things – feelings, conscience, etc. – can change on a whim.

God’s Word is unchanging and gives us a standard! His Word is the only authority the Christian has when it comes to our morals. According to John 12:48, His Word is the standard by which we will be judged.

For the child of God there is no other moral authority outside of God and His Word.

Where do you get your morals?
