Burleson SPO gifted pair of sunglasses by Drake Eye Center

Not all heroes wear capes, but Maui Jim is on a mission to make sure they wear sunglasses. The sunglasses maker based in Hawaii recently reached out to Hartselle’s Drake Eye Center in search of a local hero to gift with a free pair of nonprescription sunglasses. They found their local hero in Hartselle officer David McMurray.

McMurray has been on the force for a year, where he serves the community as the School Protection Officer at Burleson Elementary School.

Earlier this week, Capt. Robert Finn was responsible for getting McMurray to Drake Eye Care while keeping the surprise a secret. “He’s a very humble guy and you couldn’t ask for a better guy to work with,” Finn said.

According to Brad Drake, his staff was tasked with finding someone in the community that goes above and beyond on the job. Brittany Helton drives past McMurray on the job every day on her way to her job at the eye care center.

“The definition of integrity is doing the right thing when nobody is looking, and you didn’t know it but Brittany saw you and noticed your integrity,” Drake said.

Helton said she often noticed McMurray interacting with children and once noticed him giving a student a fist bump.

The certificate he received reads in part, “In recognition of your great kindness and selflessness toward the members of his community, we at Drake Eye Care and the Hartselle Police Department want you to know the enthusiasm you show every day at your job is not something that goes unnoticed. We appreciate you very much.”

McMurray said at first, he thought he was being pranked and the gift came as a complete shock to him.

“Are you sure I’m not being punked?” he asked Finn and the members of the staff. “Thank you so much, I’m honored and I appreciate it.”

McMurray added the gift came at the perfect time as the lenses on his sunglasses were falling out and had to be repaired. He picked out a pair of black polarized Kahuna Maui Jim sunglasses.
