Falkville selects engineer for sidewalk grant project

Falkville Town Council approved the hiring of Goodwyn Mills Cawood to provide construction engineering and inspection services for a TAP grant sidewalk project on the west side of town at a regular meeting Jan. 4.

Implementation of the contract was made subject to the approval of the Alabama Department of Transportation. The scope of the work includes construction engineering, inspection, materials sampling and testing and contract administration.

The fee for engineering services is $85.336.50, of which 80 percent is eligible for reimbursement from the state.

In other council business, at a work session preceding the regular meeting, a discussion centered on the proposed donation of a portion of Bobby Brewer Field to the Morgan County Commission

Mayor Ken Winkles reported the county is willing to expend funds to upgrade the facility, to make it attractive as a venue for travel team sporting events, as long it belongs to the county.

He pointed out that fencing for a tennis court has already been removed, and fencing around the facility needs to be replaced.

“We would retain the name of the park, and a small portion of the property for our own use,” he explained. “Before the property can be donated, we would need to declare it as being surplus and subdivide it into two parcels.”

Morgan County Schools Superintendent Robert Elliott appeared before the council to express thanks for its support of Falkville High School and Falkville Elementary School.

“I look forward to continuing the partnership we share in providing a safe environment and quality education for our children,” he added.

The council also

—approved the installation of a water line on Winton Private Drive at a cost of less than $10.000.

—approved one-step pay increases for town employees Chrystalynn Beard, Brooke Jones and Levi George on their completion of training courses related to their jobs.
