Morgan deputy gored by bull undergoes transplant surgery

The Morgan County sheriff’s deputy who was gored by a bull in August underwent a successful small intestine and bowel transplant surgery Friday at Ohio’s Cleveland Clinic, according to his recovery Facebook page

Caleb Brooks has been waiting for the organ since the incident that happened on his farm in Somerville this summer.

Two weeks ago, Brooks was greenlighted for the surgery, but the transplant team was not satisfied with the state of the donated organ.

Brooks’ wife Madeline posted several updates on the Our Journey Praying4Brooks Facebook page Friday after Caleb was out of surgery.

Caleb had a rough start to the morning pain wise until they put him on a morphine pump,” she wrote. “Dr. Fujiki, a doctor on our transplant team, made rounds today. He called and let me know that Caleb is doing just as they thought he would, and exceeding their expectations.

He said that his surgery site looks great and that everything is working properly internally. His bloodwork is normalizing as well.

Dr. Fujiki said they plan to move him out of SICU tomorrow, and from then on, he will be on the transplant floor. He is so ready to get into his own room at the hospital, and the transplant rooms are really nice.”

Madeline wrote that her husband will be on immunosuppressants for the rest of his life because there will always be a possibility of his body trying to reject the transplanted intestine.

I know I’ve said it a million times, but our God is so good,” the post continues. “He is never failing.

I am so, so thankful for my husband and thankful that God made this transplant successful. This journey has taken I love you to a whole other level. I can’t wait until the day I can hold his hand and hug him tight.”
