Edna Earl Rutsey

Danville

Mrs. Edna Earl McCalman Rutsey, 88, passed away Nov. 15 at NHC Healthcare. She was born Nov. 26, 1931, in Cullman County to Earl Hicks McCalman and Ruby Lou Goodwin McCalman. She was a member of the Knights of Columbus, working with the Widow’s Program, and a member of St. Ann’s Annunciation of the Lord Catholic Church in Decatur. She was employed as a social worker for the Parma Hospital in Parma, Ohio, prior to her retirement.

Preceding her in death were her husbands, Guy D. Jackson and James Patrick Rutsey.

Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Jackson Wolf (Dan), Strongsville, Ohio; one sister, Delores Poole (Doug), Danville; two brothers, Felix McCalman, Florence, S.C., and Michael McCalman (Carol), Daphne; two grandchildren, Michelle and Beth Anne; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service will be held by the family at a later date.

 

Shirley Sargent Carter

Warren, Ohio

Shirley Sargent Carter, 85, of Warren, Ohio, passed away Nov. 16 at Trumbull Regional Medical Center. She was born Aug. 8, 1935, in Gaines, WV, a daughter of the late Thomas J Sargent and the late Iva M (Waugh) Sargent.

Shirley was a homemaker who enjoyed crossword puzzles, church, day outings and reading. Her favorite passion and memories were the times she spent with her 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters, Donna and Deborah of Warren, Ohio; sons, Donald of Bohol, Philippines, and Kevin of Hartselle; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five siblings.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband William Clinton Carter; and five siblings.

Services will be private. Carl W. Hall Funeral Home is handling these arrangements. She will be laid to rest at Roselawn Cemetery, Decatur.

 

Sharon Lee Seals

Hartselle

Sharon Lee (Shutes) Seals, 72, passed away Nov. 16 at her residence.

She is the daughter of Bernard and Frances (Butler) Shutes, who preceded her in death. She was born in Three Rivers, Michigan, Oct. 9, 1948. She was a 1966 graduate of Three River High School.

Sharon is survived by her husband, Garry Seals; daughter, Tammy Lee (Roberts) Barber; and her husband, Ricky Barber, of Danville; son, Todd Roberts and wife Debbie of Cullman; two brothers, Skip Shutes and wife Kathy and Gary Shutes, all of Three Rivers, Michigan; sister, Margaret O’Connell (Tim), Portage, Michigan; four grandchildren, Joshua Barber and wife Jessica, Justin Barber and wife Megan, Melanie Mae Roberts and Brandon Roberts and wife Tristan; and five great-grandchildren, Spencer Barber, Paisley Barber, Delaney Barber, Piper Barber and Ellie Roberts.

Cremation has taken place, and services were held at Peck Funeral Home in Hartselle Nov. 21 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

 

Rosemary Langley McKissack

Hartselle

Funeral service for Rosemary Langley McKissack, 85, was held Nov. 19 at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tim Herron and the Rev. Brad Sheats officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial was in Hartselle City Cemetery. Mrs. McKissack passed away Nov. 16 at Decatur–Morgan Hospital. She was born April 1, 1935, in Louisiana to Joseph Wilfred Langley and Shirley Mary (Delahoussaye) Langley.

She was a homemaker for her family, who she loved greatly. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed gospel music, gardening and sewing her quilts. Preceding her in death were her husband and best friend, Talmadge (Tamp) McKissack; an infant granddaughter, Emily Madison Prater; two brothers, Roland Langley and Carl Langley; a sister; Helena Blanchette; and a son-in-law, Ray Ferguson. Survivors include two sons, Tim McKissack (Pat) and Brian McKissack (Rhonda); four daughters, Shelia Sheats (Frankie), Sonya Ferguson, Angie Wilhite (Greg) and Lana Prater (Matt); one brother, Charles Langley (Crystal); two sisters, Windola Cowart (Mike) and Sharon Lanthier (Dennis); 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Pallbearers were her grandsons.

 

Dolores Gilchrist

Decatur

Funeral service for Dolores Gilchrist, 88, was Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. at Hartselle Church of Christ with Phillip Hines officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial was in Hartselle Memory Gardens. Mrs. Gilchrist died Nov. 17. She was born Dec. 10, 1931, in Lawrence County. She was a member of the Hartselle Church of Christ and was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.

She raised three of her grandsons, Charles, Bobby and Mark Stinnett. It gave her great joy to work in her yard and to bake for her neighbors, friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewie Gilchrist, and her parents, Theo and Iren Hampton Wilson. Survivors include one son, Stacy Stinnett (Stephanie), Athens; one daughter, Beverly Wilson (Bob), Decatur; one brother, Shelby Wilson (Bobby Ann), Athens; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Steven Breeding, Michael Breeding, Charles Stinnett, Bobby Stinnett, Mark Stinnett and Bob Wilson.

 

Phyllis Jean Holz Lester

Hartselle

Phyllis Jean Lester, 91, of Hartselle, formerly of Streator, Illinois, passed away Nov. 10 at Summerford Nursing Home. Services were held at 2 p.m. At Winterrowd Funeral home in Streator, Illinois, with the Rev. Noel Maughmer officiating. Burial was in the Long Point Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Nathan Lester, Kevin Shannon, Scott Fulkerson, Ben Bentlin and Bill Zeilman.

Phyllis was born July 7, 1929, in Streator, Illinois, to Herbert and Mildred (Ramme) Holz. She married Irwin Lester Sept. 28, 1947. He preceded her in death June 23, 2011.

Surviving are daughter Patricia (James) Svetz of Hartselle; son David (Joy) Lester of Bolivar, Tennessee; grandchildren Monica Shannon of Decatur, Marcy Murphy of Castle Rock, Colorado, and Nathan Lester of Aiken, S.C.; three great-grandchildren, Christian Murphy, Aidan Shannon and Rylee Lester; a sister, Marge (Lyle) Shaw of Washington, Illinois; and a brother, Herb (Helen) Holz of Ancona. She is preceded in death by her parents; stepmother Minnie Holz; husband; sisters Norma Ott and Leona Fargher; brother Harold Holz; and a niece, Diana Snyder.

Phyllis was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hartselle, and she was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, any donations be made to Hartselle First United Methodist Church or American Diabetes Association. Peck Funeral Home assisted the family.

 

Charles Louis Waddell

Vinemont

Funeral service for Charles Louis Waddell, 80, was Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Malcolm Carter II, Bro. Charles Sinyard and Bro. Melvin Hunter officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial was in Salem Cemetery.

Mr. Waddell died Nov. 16 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born Sept. 27, 1940, in Morgan County to Ivan Claude Waddell and Lydia Ann Goode. He was employed by the Wallace Center, in the maintenance department, prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Temple Baptist Church and a member of the National Guard. Preceding him in death were his parents; a daughter, Tina Marie Waddell; and a brother, James Waddell.

Survivors include his wife, Reba Nell Waddell; three sons, David Waddell (Chessi), Tim Waddell (Annette) and Steve Waddell (Kim); two daughters, Brittany Coker (Donald) and Kayla Caraway; one sister, Laverne Moody; five grandchildren, Josh, Coty, Zakkery, Nicholas and JoAnna; and three great-grandchildren, Ava Claire Coker, Iris Kate Parton and Alayah Waddell.

Pallbearers were David Waddell, Tim Waddell, Steve Waddell, Coty Waddell, Zakkery Waddell, Nicholas Waddell. Josh Waddell and Donald Coker.

 

Shirley Ann Shelton

Cullman

Funeral service for Shirley Ann Shelton, 70, was Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Michael Gunter officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial was in Cook Cemetery.

Ms. Shelton died Nov. 17 at Hanceville Health and Rehab.

She was born Feb. 10, 1950, in Morgan County to John Harvey Stinson and Flossie Lindsey Stinson.

She was a homemaker for her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include one son, David Baker, one daughter, Dena Dingler, one brother, Bud Stinson, and one grandchild.

 

Charlie Prince

Hartselle

Funeral service for Charlie Prince, 59, was Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Bro. Fred Hembree officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial was in Hartselle City Cemetery.

Mr. Prince passed away Nov. 17 at his residence. He was born Feb. 17, 1961, in Morgan County to Paul Gregory Prince and Betty Jane Stewart Prince.

He was a 1980 graduate of Hartselle High School. He was an avid and expert hunter who loved deer hunting, being outdoors and his career as a dairy farmer. He enjoyed The Andy Griffith Show, Western movies and John Wayne movies, folk music and country music.

He was a National High School Roping Champion. His family called him a “daddy’s boy.” Charlie loved life and lived well.

Preceding him in death were his mother, Betty Jane Prince, and two sisters, Carolyn Prince and Mary Paul Prince Hendry.

Survivors include his wife, Juana Rodriguez Prince, Hartselle; his parents, Paul Gregory Prince (Betty), Hartselle; one daughter, Elizabeth Prince Thompson, Decatur; one son, Charlie Prince, Hartselle; two sisters, Anne Prince Walker, Hartselle, and Becky Prince Tankersley, Hartselle; and two grandchildren, Oliver Thompson and Shine Thompson.

Pallbearers were Kelly Townsend, Jovani Martinez, Edwardo Martinez, Artie Thompson, Juan Cortez, Phillip Hill and Jerry Self.

 

Dorothy “Dottie Vest Smith

Decatur

Dorothy “Dottie” Vest Smith, 85, of Decatur passed away Nov. 19 at her home surrounded by family.

A Celebration of Life service was held Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. at Decatur Baptist Church, with Bro. Doug Ripley officiating and two of her grandsons, James Dekoker and Adrian Baker, speaking.

Dottie, lover of Jesus, was a member of Decatur Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, the Rev. Hank Smith; her children, Dara Cobb (Richard), Daphana DeKoker (Rick), Deree Tarwater (Randy), and David Smith (Rozlynn); 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; her sisters Alyine Keenum, Peggy Appleton, Pat Ritterhouse and Sandra Roden; and her brother, Mac Vest.

She is preceded in death by her son, Byron Baker, and his wife Patti; her parents, Herman and Estelle (Wallace) Vest; her sister, Imogene Hensley; and brothers Bill Vest and Wendell Vest.

In lieu of flowers the family requests any donations be made to Decatur Baptist Church for missions or to The Gideons International for Bibles.

 

Sarah Inez Anders Sims

Hartselle

A graveside funeral service and interment for Sarah Inez Anders Sims, 91, were held Nov. 21 at Hartselle Memory Gardens with Bro. Eric Bagwell officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Sims died Nov. 20. She was born May 25, 1929, in Morgan County to James Dewey Anders and Sarah Ola Maze Anders. She was employed as the secretary for White & Cook Feed and Seed prior to her retirement and was a member of the Hartselle First Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Reuben Sims, her parents and four brothers, Herbert, Howard, Hoyd and Harold Anders.

Survivors include one daughter, Sarah Beth Sims Bell (Joel), Hartselle; two sons, Edward Lewis Sims (Joann), Decatur, and Jerry Don Sims (Rita), Hartselle; two sisters, Lillian Collins, Blairsville, Goergia, and Jean Palmer, Hartselle; six grandchildren, who will also service as honorary pallbearers: April Mathews, Adam Bolan, Jacob Bell, Kathy Greenwell, Bob Sims and Will Sims; and eight great-grandchildren.

 

Charles C. E. Ford

Eva

Funeral service for Charles C.E. Ford, 82, of Eva was held Nov. 24 at 1:30 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dewayne Harper officiating. Burial was in Lawrence Cove Cemetery. Peck Funeral Home directed.

Mr. Ford was born July 1, 1938, in Morgan County to Thurman Daily Ford and Lizzie Latrice Holmes Ford. He passed away Nov. 21 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. Mr. Ford was a member of Oden Ridge Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Charles owned C.E. Ford and Son Landscaping and dump truck service. He was also assistant fire chief at Oden Ridge Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Ford loved his family and friends. He was a member of the North Alabama Tractor Club.

Survivors include wife Glenda Oden Ford; son Darrell (Phyllis) Ford; two daughters, Julia (Ricky) Mooney and Rhonda (Chad) Kruger; five grandchildren, Josh (Misty) Mooney, Haley Freeman, Jada (Timmy) Sullenger, Anneliese Kruger, Brennam Kruger; five great-grandchildren, Kolton Mooney, KarLee Mooney, Stone Freeman, Jolee Sullenger and Neva Sullenger; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Pallbearers were Josh Mooney, Timmy Sullenger, Burgess Smith, Mike Gibson, Neal Archer, Jeff Atkins. Honorary pallbearers were Kolton Mooney, Stone Freeman and Brennam Kruger.

The family requested everyone wear a mask because of COVID-19, and the service will be live streamed on YouTube.

 

Mike Dunlap

Decatur

Private graveside service and interment for Mike Dunlap, 65, were held Nov. 23 at 11:30 a.m. at Union Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with Bro. Matt Nail officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. No visitation is scheduled.

Mr. Dunlap died Nov. 21 at his residence. He was born March 24, 1955, in Morgan County to James Harold Dunlap and Margaret Aline Russell Dunlap.

Mr. Dunlap was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Madison Dunlap, and a brother, Tim Dunlap. Mike was a member of the Church at Quail Creek.

Survivors include stepdaughter Madison Peterson, stepdaughter Georgia Peterson, brother Jeff Dunlap (Debbie), sister Lisa Dunlap Albert (John), sister-in-law Nancy Dunlap and several loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Pallbearers were Jon Dunlap, Clint Dunlap, Jack Albert, Sam Albert, Scott Ellis, and Chad Halbrooks.
