Talmadge Joel Mooney

Talmadge Joel Mooney, 79, was born to Florence Taylor Mooney and John C. Mooney Dec. 17, 1940, in Morgan County. He was an Army veteran and retired with the Sheet Metal Workers Local 48 Union after 50 years. He passed away Oct. 15 at his residence.  

He is survived by his wife, Rhonda Mooney, and his children, Annette (John) Shirey, Vann (Kyong) Mooney, Michael (Heather) Mooney and Leigh Anne (Rick) Layzod. He had 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.  

His memorial service was held Oct. 24 at Rock Creek Baptist Church in Eva at 2 pm.  

 

Ricky Alvin Cook 

Hartselle 

It is with great sadness that the family of Ricky Alvin Cook announces his passing after a brief illness Oct. 18 at the age of 73 years.  

Ricky will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Brenda Owens Cook, and his children Jason Cook and Beth Cook-Bradford (Mathew). Ricky will also be remembered by his two grandchildren, Grace Cook and Owen Cook, and his three stepgrandchildren, Hannah Holmes, Maddie Bradford and Hayden Bradford.  

He is survived by his two sisters, Jewell Sullins and Martha Jane Carlton, and his brother Danny Cook.  

Ricky was preceded in death by his parents, Orbie and Ressie Cook; his son Brent Cook; and his brother Barry Cook. 

Ricky was born in Hamilton in 1947 and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1965 before attending the University of North Alabama. He and Brenda married in 1968 in Hartselle. He began his career at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Decatur before moving to Scottsboro in 1978. He and Brenda retired in 2007 and moved back to Hartselle.  

Ricky was an active member of the West Hartselle Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and on several committees within the church. He was an avid golfer, and he loved cheering on the Crimson Tide and the Atlanta Braves and spending time with his family and friends.  

A funeral service was scheduled for 11 a.m. Oct. 21 at Peck Funeral Home in Hartselle. Senior pastor Greg Lee of West Hartselle Baptist officiated. The family asks for donations in Ricky’s memory to the West Hartselle Baptist Church Missionary Fund at 1640 W. Main St., Hartselle, AL 35640. 

 

Wilma Inez Kirby 

Hartselle 

Funeral service for Wilma Inez Kirby, 86, was held Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Joey Coots officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial was in Johnson Chapel Cemetery.  

Mrs. Kirby died Oct. 18 at her residence. She was born Aug. 29, 1934, in Lawrence County to Berry Lewis Hill and Leler Laurene Gibson Hill.  

Mrs. Kirby was a Baptist and was a beloved mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother and greatgreatgrandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Kirby; a greatgranddaughter, Destiny Marie Patterson; and a brother, Jimmy Hill.  

Survivors include son Tommy Kirby (Donna), Hartselle; son Lewis Kirby (Lisa), Priceville; daughter Sandra Brown, Hartselle; daughter Sue Chapman (Wayne), Hartselle; daughter Wanda Patterson (Dave), Hartselle; brother, Steve Hill (Shelier), Speake; brother DeWayne Hill (Debbie), Moulton; sister Opal West, Decatur; 12 grandchildren; 32 greatgrandchildren; and five greatgreatgrandchildren 

Her grandsons served as pallbearers. 

 

John Daniel Powell 

Falkville 

Funeral service for John Daniel Powell, 78, was held Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church with Malcolm Carter II and David Sheaver officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial was held in Powell’s Chapel Cemetery.  

Mr. Powell died Oct. 18 at his residence.  

He was born March 13, 1942, in Morgan County to Walter Jasper Powell and Daisy Ellen Powell. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Cullman and a respected member of the Powell’s Chapel community. He was a loving husband and father.  

Mr. Powell was preceded in death by his parents, 12 brothers and sisters and one adopted niece.  

Survivors include wife Janice Powell; son, Mark Powell (Kelli); daughter, Robin Powell Green (Randy); sister Dortha Shadix; grandchildren, Garrett Powell (Shea), Marli Powell, Seth Ward (Nikki) and Rheagan Hipp; nine greatgrandchildren; and niece Hazel Twilley 

Pallbearers were Dennis Shadix, Brian Murphy, Kim Ball, Glenn Cobb, Lee Duke, Michael Campbell and Joe Powell.  

 

Anthony Freeman 

Lacey’s Spring 

Funeral service for Anthony Freeman, 56, of Lacey’s Spring, was held Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. at Calvary Holiness Church with Bro. Corey Morrow officiating and Peck Funeral Home Directing. Burial was at Valhermoso Baptist Cemetery.  

Mr. Freeman died Oct. 19. He was born Aug. 27, 1964, in Morgan County to Horace Lowe Freeman and Reba Louise Morrow Freeman. He was a carpenter.  

Mr. Freeman was preceded in death by his father and his stepmother, Evelyn Freeman.  

Survivors Include his wifeCarla Davis; two daughtersMaranda Freeman (Kris Wickham) and Kelly Summerford (Joey); his motherReba Louise Moses; three brothersRaymond Freeman (Sheree), Eddie Freeman (Sherry) and Timothy Freeman (Sharon); and five grandchildren 

Pallbearers were Dusty Gore, Tyler Fortenberry, Matt Freeman, Landon Pannell, Kris Wickham and Jamie Morrow. 

 

Bill Farris 

Hartselle 

Funeral service for Bill Farris, 77, was held Oct. 23 at 11 a.m. at Hartselle First United Methodist Church with Bro. Bobby Ray Halbrooks officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.  

Mr. Farris died Oct. 20 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born July 14, 1943, in Alton, Ill., to Eldon Bracken Farris and Beatrice Bernadine Farris. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 27 years until retirement, and he worked for Boeing for 22 years on the base station. He was a member of the Hartselle First United Methodist Church.  

In lieu of flowers, make donations to “The Good Samaritan Fund” at Hartselle First United Methodist Church, 210 Hickory St., Hartselle AL, 35640.  

Survivors include wife Stephanie Farris, Hartselle; son Russell W. Farris (Paula); two daughtersMelissa Hoezee and Erin Waddell (Will); brother John Farris (Sandy); sister Susan Basefield (Wayne); four grandchildrenRyan (Sara)JoshuaJoey and Jackson; greatgrandchild Kinsley; and several nieces and nephews. 

 

Lynn Carden 

Decatur 

Funeral service for Lynn Carden, 52, was held Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Michael Gunter officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial was in Hartselle Memory Gardens.  

Mrs. Carden died Oct. 20 at Decatur Morgan Parkway Medical Center. She was born May 28, 1968, in Illinois to Mavis Reba Nichols Collins. She was employed with Daikin as an administrative assistant.  

She was preceded in death by her mother and her nephew, Adam Barnett.  

Survivors include husband Jeff Carden; one sister, Rita Barnett (Frankie); four brothersChris Collins, Troy Nichols, Jacky Collins and Timothy Collins; mother-in-law Betty Carden; nephew Daniel Barnett (Elizabeth); nephew Kyle Barnett (Chrissy Hooker); nephew Harley Carden; greatnieces Makenzie Barnett, Eve Barnett and Rory Barnett; and greatnephew Hunter Barnett 

Pallbearers were family and friends.   

 

Elizabeth Ydeen Morgan 

Cullman 

Graveside service and interment for Elizabeth Ydeen Morgan, 74, were held Oct. 25 at 2:30 p.m. at Union Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Eugene Loyd officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.  

Mrs. Morgan died Oct. 20 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Sept. 18, 1946, in Morgan County to Basil Avery Eargle Sr. and Azzlee Runge Eargle.  

Mrs. Morgan was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ed Morgan and a sister, Nell Livingston. She was a member of Flint Creek Baptist Church. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend and loved everybody, and she loved to laugh. 

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Marsh (Gary) and Hazel Freeman; three brothers, Basil Eargle Jr. (Pearlene), Mike Eargle (Ramona) and Jeff Eargle; two sistersBeverly Bates (Danny) and Nett Graham (Jerry); five grandchildren, Joshua Marsh Sr. (Denise), Robert Marsh, Zackery Morgan, Ashley Morgan and Caleb Freeman; and eight greatgrandchildren 

Her four grandsons – Joshua Marsh Sr., Robert Marsh, Zackery Morgan and Caleb Freeman – served as pallbearers along with Charlie Morgan and Frank Morgan Jr. 

 

Larry Lee Guthrie 

Decatur 

Larry Lee Guthrie, 77 of Decatur passed away Oct. 23 at his residence. No services are planned.  

Mr. Guthrie was born July 25, 1943, in Paris, Tenn., to Clarence Guthrie and Rosa Greene Guthrie. He is preceded in death by his parents and son Larry Lee Guthrie Jr.  

Mr. Guthrie was a civil engineer for TVA.  

Survivors include his wife, Becky Guthrie; son Greg (Bridgette) Guthrie; daughter Gayle Guthrie; daughter-In-law Brandi Guthrie; brother, Jerry Guthrie; and four grandchildrenLarry Lee Guthrie III, Jameson Guthrie, Conner Guthrie and Andrew Guthrie. 

 

Harold Shaneyfelt 

Hartselle 

Graveside service for Harold Shaneyfelt, 86, of Hartselle was held Oct. 26 at 11 a.m. at Lebanon Cemetery with Dr. Randy Ashley officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.  

Mr. Shaneyfelt was born May 1, 1934, in Hartselle to Hubert Shaneyfelt and Annie Lee Wright Shaneyfelt. He passed away Oct. 23 at Summerford Nursing Home. He served in the United States Army. Harold was a loving husband and father. Survivors include his wife Evelyn Shaneyfelt, daughter Carol Shaneyfelt and sister and Frances Burden.
