Jesus is living water
By Todd Barrier
Lately I have been loving drinking water. I really can’t get enough of it. I’ve always enjoyed it, but now I crave it!
I drink it after a run, before bed and during my P.E. classes each day, and it just satisfies me so much.
It hasn’t always been that way. I mean, I could always drink water and enjoy it, but I never craved it – never felt like my body needed it.
Maybe the reason I crave water now is because it’s different than before: I add a sugar–free Hawaiian Punch flavor packet to all of my water. So now my water is “super water” to me.
It reminds me of the woman at the well. Jesus needed some water, but in a sense, the woman needed it more. Spiritually, in John 4:10, Jesus told the woman that He could give her living water.
Jesus was the living water, and He is essential to our spiritual survival, just like water is essential to our physical survival.
After this encounter, the woman craved that water; she went into the city and couldn’t keep it to herself! In verse 29 she told people this man told her “all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?”
Water hadn’t meant that much to her before; sure, it was essential, but it was always there and didn’t seem too interesting, just like my water pre-Hawaiian Punch. Now she knew about the water Jesus said would make her never thirst again! She had added Jesus, the living water, to her essential list.
Now, what kind of water are you craving? What kind of water can you not get enough of? I pray it’s the living water and you’ve added Jesus to your spiritual diet! His living waters are like a flavor packet for your soul.
