Sharon Jacqueline Lockett White

Danville

Ms. Sharon White, 67, passed away Aug. 8. She was born June 6, 1953, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Robert Kenneth Lockett Sr. and Elizabeth Marie Deeds Lockett.

She was an avid child- and animal-lover. She always took in strays, whether homeless children or unwanted or injured pets. She was employed as a dog groomer prior to her passing.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Larry E. Ransom Lockett and Ronald Edward Lockett; and her grandson, Tyler Frey.

Survivors include three sons, Richard “Rick” Frey, Michael Frey and William “Billy” F. Horn III; one sister, Shirley Marie Binko; four brothers, Robert Lockett Jr., Michael Lockett, Robert Hoerner Jr. and Roger Hoerner; one stepbrother, William “Buddy” Munford-Lockett; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

No services are scheduled at this time. Peck Funeral Home assisted the family.

Connie “Blevins” Sindorf

Florida

Connie “Blevins” Sindorf, 60, passed away July 18 following a battle with cancer. Her husband, Rick Sindorf, was at her bedside when she passed.

She was born Nov. 15, 1959, in Geneva, Ohio, to Vaughn and Nancy Blevins. When Connie was a young child, the family moved to Eva, where she lived throughout her high school age. She attended Brewer High School and graduated in 1978. Connie later moved to Oklahoma and met Rick. She lived in Oklahoma most of her adult life, moving to Florida in her later years.

Connie was preceded in death by her parents, Vaughn and Nancy Blevins. She is survived by her siblings, Ben Blevins, Dwight Blevins and Becky “Blevins” Metcalfe, along with many nieces and nephews.

Interment was a private family service.

The family wishes in lieu of flowers, donate to the American Cancer Society in her name.

Curtis Grover “Bull” Nelson

Eva

A graveside funeral service and interment for Curtis Grover “Bull” Nelson, 89, were held Aug. 14 at 11 a.m. at Eva Cemetery with Bro. Bill Stone and Bro. Ronnie Pittinger officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Nelson passed away Aug. 10. He was born Jan. 14, 1931, to Lee Roy Nelson and Ivory Bell Holmes Nelson. Mr. Nelson was married Dec. 26, 1953, to his wife, Marie.

He was a member of the Eva United Methodist Church. He was saved in October 2005 and baptized Feb. 12, 2006, at Decherd Methodist Church.

He attended St. Bernard College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology and history and played college basketball. From 1956-1961 he was a high school basketball head coach for East Limestone High School and also helped start the football and baseball teams. He was an original board member for the Alabama School of Gospel Music at Snead State College, the Alabama State Gospel Singing Convention president in 1984 and the National Gospel Singing Convention president in 1990.

He served as a sergeant of combat engineer, serving three years in Korea, and was honorably discharged after receiving the Korean Service Ribbon and two Bronze Campaign Stars. He loved to fish and hunt and loved Alabama football. He also enjoyed bluegrass and gospel music and cooking pecan and egg custard pies.

He worked until his retirement as a GS-12 government inspector for the U.S. Department of Defense.

Mr. Nelson took vegetables all over the Eva community to give away to his beloved friends.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Marie Morgan Nelson; his parents; a brother, Etheridge Lee Nelson; a sister, Shelva Jean Turner; and three brothers-in-law, Joe Turner, Leo Haney and Wayne Boughman.

Survivors include two sons, Fred Nelson (Jerone) and Pat Nelson (Leslie); one daughter, Amy Steakley (Louis); three grandchildren, Shelby Beck (Chris), Jake Nelson and Lee Steakley; step-grandchildren Stacy Stevenson (Robby), Chad Bowling (Tammy) and Adam Bowling (Maeghan); five brothers, Olen Nelson (Margaret), James Nelson (Virginia), Rolland Nelson (Peggy), Martin Nelson Sr. (Nina) and Sydney Nelson (Anita); three sisters, Evonne Haney, Doris Boughman and Mary Hatfield (Cliff); one sister-in-law, Ella Dean Nelson; and a host of other nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Pallbearers were Louis Steakley, Lee Steakley, Martin Nelson, Jason Nelson, Corey Nelson, Tim Nelson. Bryan Nelson and Chris Blevins.

The family would like to express special thanks to the Avalon Hospice of Winchester, Tennessee, and caregivers Jannett Mears, Michelle Gautschi and Teresa Jackson for their care and compassion of our loved one.

James W. “Dub” Williams

Eva

Funeral service for James W. “Dub” Williams, 95, was Aug. 13 at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Roger Ammons officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial was in Union Hill Freewill Baptist Cemetery.

Brother Williams died Aug. 10 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born July 3, 1925, in Coffee County to Sterling Walton Williams and Selma Anderson Williams. He was a member of the Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church and was a minister.

He began his life in the Depression and later enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served for 25 years in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Music was his passion, and he played with country music greats such as Kitty Wells, Little Jimmie Dickens, George Morgan, Rose Maddux and a host of many others. He retired from Profession Carriers of the South in Huntsville at the age of 83 and continued to live his life singing in bands and gospel groups.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Joyce Bice Williams, and a son, Rudy Michael Williams.

Survivors include two daughters, Trudy Williams Stewart, Pittsville, Wisconsin, and Ramona Williams Lee, Eva; one brother, Bobby Williams (Annie Merle), Troy; five grandchildren, Dallas Hanvey, Jon Hanvey, Kris Williams (Shannon), Keri Lee and Kamron Butler (Summer); and five great-grandchildren, Brady Hanvey, Joshua Williams, Elizabeth Williams, Evan Williams and Adeline Butler.

Herbert Anders

Decatur

A celebration of life for Herbert Anders was held Aug. 15 at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home in Hartselle. Herbert left this world to be with his Savior and Best Friend Aug. 11 at his home in Decatur. Bro. R. C. Borden officiated the ceremony, and Peck Funeral Home directed. Burial was in Herring Cemetery.

Herbert is also known by his friends as Herb. He was born May 11, 1932, in Massey to James Dewey Anders and Ola Maze Anders. He graduated from Morgan County High School and was a graduate of Gradwohl School of Laboratory Technique in St. Louis, Missouri. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS LST 1148 during the Korean War, from 1950-1954. He worked as a lab technician at Baugh, Wiley, Smith Hospital and relocated to the new Parkway Medical Center as materials manager. He retired from Wolverine Tube. He was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and wanted to share his Jesus with everyone he met. He was a member of Sixteenth Avenue Baptist Church.

Mr. Anders was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Harold, Howard and Hoyd Anders.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Willa Mae Anders; two sons, Jeff Anders (Diane) and Roger Anders (Cindy); three grandchildren, Jennifer Anders, Jonathan Anders (Amanda) and Josh Anders (Christy); one great-grandchild, Rhett Anders; and sisters Inez Sims, Jean Palmer and Lillian Collins.

Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.

Brett Wallace Nance

Hartselle

Funeral service for Brett Wallace Nance, 54, was Aug. 16 at 5 p.m. at Forrest Chapel UMC with Bro. Chris Hensley officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial was in Forrest Chapel Cemetery.

Brett Wallace Nance was born April 27, 1966, to Bruce and Carol Nance in Athens. At an early age they moved to Hartselle, where Brett went to school from elementary school all the way through high school. He graduated from Hartselle High School in 1984.

Brett was an outstanding athlete and furthered his football career at the University of Alabama. After his football days, Brett married the love of his life, Teresa Webster, Oct. 3, 1987. Brett and Teresa went on to have five kids: Hunter, Ashley, Shelby, Chelsey and Kelley.

Brett loved people and doing for others; he also loved his grandbabies – all 13 of them! He was the best Big Daddy. Although we are grieving here on Earth, we are comforted knowing that Brett accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and he is now pain free in heaven.

Brett was preceded in death by his daddy, Bruce Nance, and his daughter, Chelsey Nance.

Brett is survived by his wife of almost 33 years, Teresa Nance; mother, Carol Nance Harris (Tom); one son, Hunter Nance (Cassidy); three daughters, Ashley Way (Jake), Shelby Neuheisal (Joe) and Kelley Nance (Lucas); 13 grandbabies, Grayson, Carter, Brooklyn, Lyla, Tripp Wallace, Talon, Laundrie, Rylee, Kylee, Kenslee, Braxton, Berkley and Harper; grandmother, Billie Funderburke; one brother, Scott Nance (Jenna); one sister, Jennifer Hensley (Chris); three nephews, Heath, Luke and Bo; four nieces, Molly, Cady, Maggie and Presley; and one bonus son, Mumu Jones.

James E. Mill

Huntsville

Funeral service for James E. Mill, 44, of Huntsville was Aug. 18 at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Gullett officiating. Burial was in the Turney Family Cemetery, with Peck Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Mills was born Sept. 26, 1975, in Morgan County to James Earl Mills Sr. and Dorothy Looney Mills. He passed away Aug. 14 at Haleyville Health Care.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Earl Mills Jr.

Survivors include son Brian Mills; two brothers, Dwayne Maze and Ernie Mills; four sisters, Diane King, Ann Parker, Kathy Gullett and Ellen Griffin; and ex-wife Stacy Morris.

James “Jim” Robert Compton

Hartselle

Memorial service for James “Jim” Robert Compton, 78, of Hartselle was Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. at Annunciation of the Lord Catholic Church, with Father Victor officiating. The cremains were interred in the Annunciation Catholic Church Columbariam, and Peck Funeral Home directed.

Mr. Compton passed away Aug. 15. Mr. Compton was born Jan. 11, 1942, in Decatur to Robert Louie Compton and Sarah Thornhill Compton. He graduated from Morgan County High School in Hartselle in 1960.

He served in the United States Navy from 1960-1964. Mr. Compton was shipped to Rota, Spain, and served in a Reconnaissance Squadron (UQ-2) for three years. While assigned to the UQ-2, he was deployed to Key West during the Cuba Crisis. He flew as an ECM operator and served as an aviation electronic tech. He was an ATR 2 (E-5) Petty Officer 2nd Class. He worked on the electronic components of the Saturn V while working at Boeing, later working in the late 1960s as an electronic service tech and senior system analyst.

Mr. Compton retired from Champion Paper International in 1989 and later received a second retirement from Weyerhauser Paper Company.

He was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Raymond “Ray” Compton. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choosing in honor of the memory of Jim Compton.

Survivors include wife Nancy Compton; sister Flo “Sissy” Teal; three daughters, Sarah Compton Hembree (John), Philomena Compton and Adrianne Compton; and two grandchildren, Perrin Jones and Scarlett Jones.

Tyra Lynn Pitt

Hartselle

Memorial service for Tyra Lynn Pitt, 58, of Hartselle will be held Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel.

She was born May 12, 1962 in Morgan County to Wallace Woodall and Zella Hardin Woodall. Mrs. Pitt passed away Aug. 15 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Wallace Woodall and sister Wanda Young.
