Police arrest one for drugs

Special to the Enquirer

Hidden quantities of methamphetamine and heroin were more than enough to turn a traffic stop into a drug arrest Aug. 3.

Jamie Elisha Smith, 33, of Athens was arrested for trafficking in methamphetamine and unlawful possession of a controlled substance–heroin last week after agents with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Drug Enforcement Unit conducted a traffic stop on Highway 31.

According to police Smith, who was driving, initially failed to yield before eventually coming to a stop at the Dollar General in Flint.

During a search of the vehicle, agents said they located magnetized boxes hid in the engine compartment of the vehicle, along with a handgun.

Agents discovered more than 50 grams of methamphetamine and a quantity of heroin hidden inside the boxes.

Smith’s bond for trafficking in methamphetamine was set at $250,000.

Smith remains in the Morgan County Jail pending bond revocation on trafficking in methamphetamine and attempting to flee and elude charges substantiated by the Morgan County Drug Enforcement Unit from a previous incident two weeks earlier.

During the previous incident, Smith allegedly fled and led agents on a high-speed chase that ended in Cullman County. During the pursuit, Smith was observed throwing items from the vehicle, according to the police report.

Agents were able to recover a handgun and a quantity of methamphetamine.
