City council has no plans for face mask ordinance

While positive cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in Alabama and nationwide, some municipalities are considering ordinances that require face masks or coverings to be worn in public.

Last week the Decatur City Council delayed a vote on one such ordinance, used as an example, that would impose fines of up to $500 and up to 30 days in jail on violators.

The Hartselle City Council has no current plans to introduce or discuss a similar ordinance, according to Mayor Randy Garrison.

Garrison said while he wears a face covering while in group settings and public placeshe would not support an ordinance because there would be no way to enforce it.

I think people should wear a face covering to protect themselves and others … but we don’t have the manpower to enforce an ordinance like that. We haven’t discussed it at a council meeting, but I’ve spoken with a couple members, and they’re not in favor of it either,” he said. “I can’t imagine fining someone $50 for not wearing one.

do think it’s important and a healthier way to protect yourself. I encourage people to do so, and I’ve seen more people wearing face coverings the past few weeks, but if any sort of ordinance is passed, we want to leave that up to the state.”
