A Look Back at Scotty Maples

  • Sept. 1, 1941—A son, Scotty, has been born to Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Eugene Maples here in Hartselle. Mrs. Maples is the former Mary Lou Ferguson. 
  • Sept. 16,1958—MCHS student Scotty Maples shared this remembrance with his school newspaper, the Riddle, about his classmate Archie King: “Remember all the times we slipped out of the church windows and ran outside to play? I’ll never forget the time you put me on the spot by requesting that I sing for the preacher’s daughter in front of the whole church! Then you stayed on the back seat and laughed at me cause my voice croaked. We were strictly girl haters, especially you, because at all the parties the girls had to chase you down to kiss you.”  
  • Oct. 3, 1958—The editor of the Riddle says she “knows a few boys who are eager to help the other guys at school to get their clothing line straightThey are: Archie King, Scotty Maples, Charles Penn and Charles Black – they’ll keep you up on the latest fashions. As you may know, they have been modeling for Roberts Clothing Store.”  
  • Feb. 26, 1959Scotty Maples is currently playing exceptionally well as a stellar guard on the MCHS basketball team.  
  • May 15, 1959—Scotty Maples graduated from Morgan County High School. In addition to his performance in the classroom, Scotty was a star on the MCHS basketball team, lettering for three years. 
  • Dec. 2,1959—Scotty Maples, formerly a stellar player for the MCHS basketball Tigers, is now playing on a scholarship for Clarke College in Newton, Mississippi. He is now a Panther instead of a Tiger. 
  • Feb. 25, 1965—Scotty Maples has been employed as manager of Southern Sales.  
  • Jan. 15, 1972—Scotty Maples is now a planner with the North Alabama Regional Council of Governments. NARCOG is dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals and families in Morgan, Cullman, and Lawrence Counties. Given particular attention are older adults and the disabled of all ages. 
  • March 13, 1975Scotty Maples is implementing several innovative programs as the new county recreation director. The goal of his department is to provide recreation opportunities for rural Morgan County citizens of all ages. 
  • Aug. 23, 1988—Scotty Maples and Sammie Wiley will run it off to see who will be Hartselle’s new mayor. Maples got 1,100 votes and Wiley 833. The other candidates got a combined total of 900. 
  • Sept. 13, 1988—Today’s mayoral election was won by Scotty Maples, now Morgan County parks and recreation director. He defeated businessman Sammie Wiley in a close contest.  
  • July 11, 1990—Hartselle Mayor Scotty Maples (’59) and Catherine Ann Sims (’56), a teacher at Hartselle High School, are pictured jitterbugging at the ’50s weekend reunion. They were among more than 300 MCHS graduates of the ’50s and guests who attended a sock hop at Sparkman Civic Center gym Friday night.  
  • Aug. 25, 1992—Challenger Sammie A. Wiley prevailed over incumbent Mayor Scotty Maples in today’s city elections, beating Maples by a 231vote margin. Most people feel that Maples was a good mayor. A majority decided, however, to give the runner-up in the last election a chance to see what he could do. 
  • Jan. 1, 2010—Former Hartselle mayor Scotty Maples has retired after a distinguished professional career, primarily in helping to meet the needs of local governments and the citizens they serve. Mr. Maples is the principal owner of the Local Government Enhancement Company, which enables substate governments to maximize the revenues available to meet citizen needs through centralized collection of taxes and fees. 
  • April 29, 2020—Former mayor Scotty Maples, age 78, passed away at his home in Decatur today. 
  • May 2, 2020—Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a graveside service was held today to celebrate the life of their loved one, Scotty Maples – husband, father, and grandfather.
