Title: “Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family”
Author: Robert Kolker
This book is the latest pick for Oprah’s Book Club 2020. In this nonfiction story, Don and Mimi Galvin and their 12 children were the perfect family and living the American dream after World War II. They were working hard and playing their parts. In the mid 1970s, six of the boys were diagnosed as schizophrenic.
Because of the six children being diagnosed this way, they would become the first family to be studied by the National Institute of Mental Health.
What happened behind the scenes in their home on Hidden Valley Road? How would their DNA be used in the future?
We hope you will enjoy this book and check it out at the William Bradford Huie Library of Hartselle.
Title: “The Yawns Are Coming!”
Author and Illustrator: Christopher Eliopoulos
Interest Level: Pre-K to second grade
This is one of our new books that just arrived this week. It is about two young boys who are planning the best–ever sleepover.
Of course, they have no intention of actually sleeping. They have a list of activities planned, but before they can get to them, all the yawns beginning attacking them.
They try everything to avoid the dreaded yawns, but they are unavoidable, and soon both the boys are yawning. Although they try to fight it, eventually a doze gets one of them, and then the snores appear.
The other boy is very determined to not sleep, but he is finally wrapped in a warm, safe sleepie. When morning comes, the boys, who are wide awake, make a new list and are off on a new adventure.
This is a great story with terrific illustrations – a fun read to share with children. William Bradford Huie Library is offering curbside pick–up for books and movies until we reopen. Please check the City of Hartselle Facebook or www.hartselle.org for details.
