Hartselle approves design phase on city hall project

At a regular meeting April 28, the Hartselle City Council authorized Mayor Randy Garrison to enter into a contract with Leonard Design PC of Cullman to provide design and construction documents for the renovation of the former Wells Fargo Bank Building at 611 Chestnut St.

The three-story, 21,000square foot building will serve as the municipal building when renovation is completed in 2021.

According to a proposed project schedule, design work is expected to require three months and construction eight months.

The renovated building will include a reception area, auditorium/courtroom, offices with separate meeting spaces, records vault and public restrooms on the first floor. The second floor will contain a lobby/waiting area, administrative offices, file rooms, meeting roomsrestrooms and break area. The third floor will feature renovations to existing non-compliant restrooms along with HVAC controls and startup of existing equipment.

Exterior work will involve new curtain wall window glazing and sidewalk approaches to the building.

The Council also:

  • approved an agreement with Morgan County for the use of epollbooks for the upcoming municipal elections.
  • adopted an ordinance regulating small cell tower technology facilities within the corporate limits of the city.
  • approved the issuance of an alcohol license to Andy’s Food Mart, formerly Exxon Food Mart at 101 Highway 31 N., for retail table wine and retail beeroff premises only.
  • declared as surplus property three used Mack sanitation trucks in the Public Works Department and authorized their sale on govdeals.com.
  • approved an additional $30,000 CARES Act funding for general uses at Hartselle-Morgan County Regional Airport.
  • approved Safety Award winners for the second quarter as follows: Lakeshia Collier, Gabe Tucker, Darryl Turney, Chuck Porter and Terry Taylor.
  • appointed Shirley Davenport as a member of the Central Business District Board.

Garrison commended department heads and employees for continuing to do a good job under difficult circumstances brought about by the coronavirus pandemic. He said discussion is ongoing with respect to the status of youth sports and the Aquatic Center.
