With the cancellation of the spring sports season, the Enquirer is spotlighting senior athletes from its coverage area with Q-and-A stories. We’ll look to touch base with many more seniors over the next few weeks.

Johnnie Keahey has grown up between the fouls lines in Priceville. He started playing baseball at the age of four and has worked hard every year to be better than the year before.

Keahey has been a part of the Priceville baseball program since he stepped on campus as a freshman. He has been on the varsity for three years after being on the JV as a freshman.

He has seen the team grow and become a better program in his four years.

Coming into this season, he and his teammates had a goal of making it to the state playoffs and compete for a championship. Unfortunately, his season came to a premature end due to the spread of the coronavirus.

The AHSAA moved to cancel the spring sports season on March 27th after Governor Kay Ivey announced on March 26th that schools would be canceled for the remainder of the school year.

The Enquirer spoke with Keahey about his baseball career and the disappointment he has experienced due to the cancellation of his season.

Q: When did you get started playing baseball?

A: I started playing when I was 4 years old.

Q: When did you know you wanted to play for the Bulldogs?

A: I knew that I wanted to play for Priceville when I was 7. That was when I attended a Huntsville Stars baseball camp and knew then that I wanted to go back and be a Bulldog.

Q: What was it like waiting for your moment to come?

A: I was excited and ready to seize the opportunity I was given. It was my time to do what I’d been preparing for since I was a young boy.

Q: What were your thoughts when you got the news that your season had come to a close, long before you had planned?

A: When I learned of the news, I was extremely emotional and at a complete loss for words. I would have never expected my senior season to end this way and it’s truly heartbreaking. I love my teammates and coaches like family and I would do anything to take the field with them one more time.

Q: What are your plans for after graduation?

A: Attending Calhoun Community College and pursuing a degree in Business Management and become an entrepreneur.

Q: What has it been like to play for Priceville High School?

A: It’s been a wild and unforgettable experience with some outstanding teammates and amazing coaching staff.
