Tigers wrestling team advances to Duals State Championship

The Hartselle Tigers wrestling team won the 6A Region 7 championship last week. They defeated Decatur (57-18), Muscle Shoals (77-8), and won by default over Athens when they opted not to wrestle.

The region championship gives the Tigers a spot in the Final 16 of the 6A Duals State Championship. They will face Fort Payne, Region 8 runner-up, in the first round. If they win round one they will advance to the quarterfinals to face the winner of Mae Jemison and Decatur. The matches will take place Saturday, January 18th at Mae Jemison in Huntsville starting at 10 am.

Hartselle Invitational

On December 14th, the Tigers finished runner-up at the Hartselle Invitational. They finished with 149 points, trailing Sparkman who had 165. Tigers’ wrestlers Payton Roberts (126), Karl England (160), and Ryan Garrison (285) won their weight classes.

The Jr. High Tigers easily won the Hartselle Jr. High Invitational. They finished with 169 points, 40.5 points ahead of runner-up Hayden (128.5). Jr. High Tigers’ wrestlers Ethan Baldazo (85), Jacob Doshier (95), Garrett Willingham (106), Jameson Falciani (120), Jameyson Waits (126), and Zyler Waddell (285) won their weight classes.

Arab Jr. High Christmas Tournament

The Jr. High Tigers finished runner-up to McAdory. They finished with 123.5 points. Jr. High Tigers’ wrestlers Ethan Baldazo (85) and Gage Roberts (97) won their weight classes.

Redhawk Rampage – Stewarts Creek High School (TN)

The Tigers traveled north of the border on January 4th to participate in the Redhawk Rampage at Stewarts Creek High School in Smyrna, TN. They finished 9th out of 20 teams. The Tigers were the lone team from Alabama in the tournament going up against teams from Tennessee and Kentucky. Three Tigers’ wrestlers placed in the top for in their weight classes, Lincoln Bryant (#2 in 120), Caden McDonald (#4 in 145), and Ryan Garrison (#3 in 285).

“This was a great opportunity to wrestle in a very competitive tournament facing teams that we don’t normally see,” said Hartselle coach Joe Stephenson.
