Looking for adventure
By Phillip Hines
Life dull? Want to spice it up? Have an adventure? Break out of the routine?
Why not try BASE jumping – parachuting from a fixed structure?
A few years ago, I was in the Charleston, West Virginia, area preaching, and I was invited to go visit the New River Gorge Bridge. It is the world’s second-largest single–arch bridge. What an amazing sight to see!
Every third Saturday in October, the bridge is closed to traffic. Spectators can walk across the bridge and watch serious BASE jumpers get their chance to fly 876 feet into the gorge below. This event is called Bridge Day.
According to those who live in West Virginia, it is unlike anything you will ever experience.
What some people will not go through for excitement.
For sheer adventure, however, living life as a Christian cannot be beat.
Have you ever done your best to live the Beatitudes? To be meek, merciful and a peacemaker? Have you ever “emptied” yourself and become the servant of others (Philippians 2:1-4)?
Have you ever spent much time with people who were sick, grieved, in trouble or simply needed someone to talk to? Have you ever become involved in the life of someone who needs you and the word of the Gospel?
If you have, you know you’ll never need to BASE jump for excitement and adventure.
There is never a dull moment when you love and reach out to the people all around you and live God’s way. Paul says it like this in Philippians 4:6-7:
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
