Falkville Council turns to county to hire SRO
The Falkville Town Council has abandoned its search for a school resource officer and is looking to Morgan County Schools to fill the position, which was vacated when Seth Sullivan resigned prior to the current school term.
After discussing the vacancy at a work session Oct. 28, Mayor Ken Winkles and council members acknowledged their inability to find a replacement and agreed to give notice to void a shared SRO agreement with the Morgan County school board. Terms of the agreement give responsibility for the hiring of the SRO to the town council, with the school system paying $20,000 annually of the SRO’s salary.
Falkville police are providing school security on a temporary basis, pending the hiring of an SRO.
The SRO agreement was approved as an agenda item for the next regular council meeting.
Winkles announced Falkville is seeking a $250,000 ATRIP grant through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. The 100 percent federal grant, if approved, will be used to repair and upgrade Culver Road.
City clerk Dawn Estes was approved for election training for the 2020 municipal election at Gulf Shores Dec. 4-6 at a cost of $1,389.15.
Police officer Cody Hudgins was approved for SkidCar training in Montgomery Nov. 19 at a cost of $90.
Items to be considered for approval at the next council meeting are:
- annual renewal of membership with the Air Med Care Network at a cost of $4,395. Membership provides free AirEvac service for Falkville residents.
- amendment of abatement for demolition costs at 94 Clark Drive with public hearing.
- surplus property designation for backhoe bucket.
- one–step raise for Police Chief Aaron Burgess following his certification as a pepper spray instructor.
