The annual Massey Community Reunion will be Oct. 5 from 1-5 p.m. at the Massey Volunteer Fire Department, 386 Evergreen Road. The building will also be open Oct. 4 from 4-7 p.m. for viewing. Many new items have been donated to join all of the other historical information, photos, keepsakes and memorabilia that will be on display.    

The original reunion began with a focus on the Massey Schools and those who attended school there or worked at the school, but it has developed into a community event. The school and community were so closely intertwined that neither can be isolated. 

The last school closed in 1969, leaving a void in the community. The reunion is for any and everyone who has an interest in the community that reached its peak in the 1950s. 

The historical documents and personal memorabilia that have been contributed and organized are most impressive, organizers said. All of the items collectively paint a remarkable picture of the activities, people and happenings that made Massey such a flourishing rural gathering place in its heyday – the growing up home of hundreds of people who have attended past reunions and shared their family souvenirs.  

A treasured Friendship Quilt made in Massey in 1934 will be on display again this year. 

While in the Massey community, attendees might want to visit three commemorative historical markers in Massey. 

One is in honor of Christopher Sheats, Massey Community and McKendree Cemetery, and it is located at the cemetery.  

Another one is in memory of the eight crewmen who died during World War II when their U.S. Army Air Corps B-26C bomber nicknamed “Katy-Did” crashed in a thunderstorm, and it is on Highway 157 about a mile east of Evergreen Cemetery near the Morgan County and Cullman County line. 

The third marker is on the grounds of Cedar Plains Christian Church, located on Cedar Plains Road.

Light refreshments and drinks will be provided Saturday. Anyone who has a favorite dish they would like to bring and share will be most welcome, but it is not expected nor required.
