Madison County uses goal line stand to defeat Brewer

The Brewer Patriots were looking to get back on the winning track as they hosted Madison County Friday night.

The visiting Tigers entered the game with a 2-2 record and 2-0 in region play, while Brewer was 2-1 and 1-1 in region play.

It would not be a winning night for the home team in the back-and-forth game..

The Patriots took the opening kickoff and marched 72 yards to get on the scoreboard first. Brewer got a 28-yard Wyatt Styles to Jonathan Morgan touchdown pass to go up 7-0.

Madison County got on the board early in the second quarter on a nine-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7-7.

The Patriots would answer the Tigers’ score with one of their own on the next drive, going 55 yards on nine plays to take a 14 -7 lead; Styles completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Kris Bramlett.

The Tigers answered back with a 16-play, 60-yard scoring drive to tie the game at 14-14. Madison County scored on a four-yard touchdown run.

Following a Patriots’ three-and-out, the Tigers moved 71 yards in two plays to take a 20-14 lead. They scored on a 47-yard run with a little less than three minutes left in the first half.

Brewer forced Madison County to go three-and-out to start the third quarter. The Tiger punt went 20 yards, giving the Patriots excellent field position at the 30-yard line.

Brewer scored two plays later on a 30-yard Styles-to-Bramlett pass to make the score 21-21 less than three minutes into the second half.

The Tigers would take the lead on their next drive with a 65-yard touchdown run, making the score 27-21.

The Patriots had a couple of chances late in the game to score, the first coming late in the fourth quarter after the Brewer defense forced a Tiger fumble that was returned to the Tigers’ 47-yard line. The Patriots got the ball to the Tigers’ 22-yard line, but a Styles interception ended the drive.

Brewer forced another Madison County fumble three plays later to give the Patriots one final chance at getting the ball in the end zone.

With less than a minute to go, the Patriots had three plays inside the Tiger’s eight-yard line but were held out of the end zone by the Tigers’ run defense. Madison County  stopped Morgan at the one-yard line to end the Brewer drive.
