Falkville shuts out Hubbard 21-0

Falkville played host to Class 1A, Area 7, foe RA Hubbard Friday night.

Both teams were coming off their first region losses of the season, but Falkville was in for a little bit of a mood-booster.

The Blue Devils were missing two starters, Christian Angulo and Brody Lacey, who was hurt in the loss to Valley Head. Hubbard was also missing its starting quarterback, along with a couple of other starters.

Falkville took the lead midway through the first quarter when Payton Sallee hit Mikell Philyaw with a 36-yard scoring strike. Following the extra point, the Blue Devils had a 7-0 lead.

The Blue Devils defense stymied the Chiefs rushing attack the entire night, and Hubbard was unable to get anything going.

The Blue Devils forced two second-quarter turnovers they turned into touchdowns to extend their lead to 21-0.

Following the first turnover, Sallee connected with Andrew Jones on a 19-yard scoring pass.

The Blue Devils later would turn a second Chiefs turnover into the 21-0 final score as Sallee ran the ball in for a touchdown.

Falkville’s defense held the Hubbard (3-2, 1-2) offense out of the end zone for the entirety of the second half.

The Blue Devils’ defense had its best performance of the year thus far, forcing four Hubbard turnovers, two fumbles and two interceptions and holding the Chiefs scoreless.

“This was a big region win, and I am proud of the way our guys played,” said Falkville head coach Tyler Mitchell. “We have made some mistakes that we need to correct, but this win gives us confidence that we can compete against anybody we play.”

Stars of the Game

  • Peyton Sallee was 14 of 19 for 140 yards with two touchdowns.
  • Jordan Greenfield had 122 yards rushing on 25 carries and one touchdown.
  • Mikell Philyaw had six receptions for 77 yards.
  • Austin Holmes recovered two fumbles to go along with an interception.

Falkville (3-2, 2-1) will travel to Priceville (3-1, 3-0) Friday night. The Bulldogs are coming off a 31-21 region victory over the Fairview Aggies.
