Brewer falls to No. 8 Madison Academy

Brewer was looking to start the season 3-0 for the first time since 1980 as they headed into their Class 5A, Region 8 contest against Madison Academy Friday night, but the Mustangs ended the Patriot winning streak once again.

This was the second year in a row the Patriots have had a chance at 3-0. Last year, Madison Academy defeated Brewer 45-7.

The Mustangs scored 17 first-quarter points to seize control of the game. Madison Academy scored twice on touchdown passes by Avery Seaton, with 10 points coming off two Brewer fumbles.

The Patriots got on the board in the second quarter as kicker Thomas Gipner connected on two of his three field goals. Following two more Mustang touchdowns, the halftime score was 31-6.

Gipner hit his third field goal of the game, a 29-yarder, in the third quarter.

Brewer’s only touchdown of the game came late in the fourth quarter on back-up quarterback Wyatt Styles’ 43-yard touchdown pass to Micah Steffan to make the final score 44-16.

Styles, who entered the game following an injury to the Patriots’ starting quarterback Patrick Johnson in the second quarter, finished with 98 yards passing.

Brewer’s rushing attack was held in check by the Mustangs’ stout defense. Jonathan Morgan managed 39 yards on 11 attempts.

“This was a tough loss for our team,” said head coach Geoff Walters. “We can’t waste time thinking about this game because we have another region game next week.”

Brewer (2-1, 1-1) returns home Friday night to host Madison County (2-2, 1-1) in a region contest. The Tigers are coming off a 35-20 win over East Limestone.
