Brewer Scores 19 Unanswered Points to Defeat Arab
Brewer extended their winning streak over rival Arab to three with their 29-21 come-from-behind victory of Friday night at Tucker Stadium.
Brewer scored on their opening drive of the game when Patrick Johnson completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Devin Weathers to make the score 7-0.
It didn’t take Arab long to answer the Patriots score with a score of their own. The Knights quickly drove downfield with a couple of passes by Charles Reynolds and the rushing attack of Reynolds and Matthew Turnage. Turnage scored on a two-yard run to tie the score at 7-7.
The Patriots moved the ball again on their third drive of the game as they used a strong rushing attack and timely passes. The Knights defense stiffened on their side of the field and forced Brewer to attempt a 27-yard field. Thomas Gipner converted the kick and gave the Patriots a 10-7 lead early in the second quarter.
Once again, Arab quickly answered with a score of their own when Turnage scored his second touchdown of the game, a 27-yard run. The score gave the Knights a 14-10 lead with over eight minutes left in the second quarter.
Arab added to their lead early in the third quarter when Reynolds hit William Hudson with an 11-yard touchdown pass. Hudson fought off two Patriot defenders to grab the pass. The score gave the Knights their largest lead of the night at 21-10.
Brewer’s offense took control of the game after the Arab score and drove downfield with a 10-play scoring drive. The Patriots ran the ball seven times while passing the ball three times. Jonathan Morgan scored from two yards out to cut the lead to 21-16. Following the two-point conversion, Brewer trailed 21-18. The highlight of the drive was a 27-yard Johnson completion to Kris Bramlett that put the Patriots on the two-yard line.
Brewer would tie the game at 21-21 with 6:44 left when Gipner connected from 37 yards out. The field goal was his second of the game.
The Patriots would get a chance to take the lead as they got the ball back after their defense stopped Arab and forced them to punt.
Brewer started their next drive at their 31-yard line. Following two passes and a penalty that left the Patriots with a third and four at the 37-yard line, they called a timeout with under two minutes to go. On the next play, Johnson hit Weathers with a 63-yard touchdown pass up the middle of the field. Following the two-point conversion, Brewer had completed the comeback to take the lead, 29-21.
Arab’s comeback attempt ended with a fumble at the Brewer 27-yard line that was recovered by Levi Rice.
Johnson finished the game 12 of 19 passing for 202 yards and an interception. Morgan rushed for 112 yards on 17 carries.
