Dozens of children sporting festive pajamas gathered at the depot Friday night to ride the rails of the Polar Express.

The children’s movie starring Tom Hanks was shown as a part of the first Kids Night Out event, hosted by the Hartselle Parks and Recreation Department.

Director Tom Chappell said the event was designed to entertain the children with a classic Christmas movie while allowing parents time to shop and eat downtown.

“We’re just trying to come up with ideas and new stuff we can do,” Chappell said. “I think we had sold 44 (tickets) and three more at the door, so we had a good turnout.”

Chappell said he hopes to continue this event and others like it in the future.
