Corinth West Baptist Church holds joint Thanksgiving service

By Martha Jackson

The Rev. Glenn Miller, pastor of Corinth West Baptist Church, welcomed his congregation and visiting pastors and members at the joint Thanksgiving service, Sunday night, Nov. 19 at 5 p.m.

The Rev. Glenn Miller gave the invocation scripture and prayer from Ephesians 5:20: Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Taylor Emerson directed the worship and praise songs, and Shanda Garner was the pianist. The Rev. Greg Aldridge, pastor of Panama Baptist Church in Cullman County, was the guest speaker. Pastors and churches were introduced before the meal was served. They are listed as follows:

  • Macedonia Baptist, the Rev. Billy Gable
  • Mt. Vernon Congregational Methodist, the Rev. Glenn McCain
  • Pleasant View Holy Church of Christ, the Rev. Ricky Ball
  • Oak Grove Church of God, the Rev. Jay Speegle

Corinth Congregational Methodist, the Rev. Wayne Jetton, was unable to attend. Also unable to attend was Piney Grove Congregational Methodist, the Rev. Glennis Vest.

Those who attended the ham and turkey meal enjoyed the bountiful buffet tables of side dishes and desserts provided by Corinth West Baptists and the other churches. This has become an annual event that area residents and visitors appreciate.

Wonderful belated happy birthday wishes go out this week to Vivian Hardin Summerford, formerly of Round Top Community, now of Nance Ford Road, Hartselle. Vivian was married to the late Fred Summerford. Many remember Vivian from her singing alto and her singing with her Hardin Family Quartet. Also, she is remembered as working at Strickland Drugs, with Dr. Martin and as the Avon Lady.

In retirement, she enjoys her family and Round Top Community Church activities. Letha Hopkins, her daughter, has three children: Bill Hopkins, Shane Hopkins and Nesha Holmes. She has nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Until a few years ago, Vivian was cooking a delicious roast beef Sunday lunch for her family on West Lacon Road.

Carolyn Besnyl celebrated her 87th birthday Nov. 16 with her daughter, Terry Boyd of Decatur. They enjoyed lunch at the Olive Garden and later a movie. Terry hosted a family meal Nov. 19 for Carolyn and for Thanksgiving. Randy Besnyl, Carolyn Besnyl, Rebekah and Robert Mobley, Daniel Mobley, Carolyn Standridge, Dwayne and Mandy Pope and Matt Roper attended the event.

Falkville First United Methodist Church had Coach Joel Schrenk as the speaker for the morning worship service Nov. 12. Coach Joel is Falkville High School’s varsity football coach. He and his family have helped local churches on projects.

Falkville United Methodist Church Youth met Nov. 14 for supper, games and their program.

Carolyn Besnyl and Randy Besnyl attended Hoyt Johnson’s 85th birthday celebration at the Massey Fire Department Community Center, given by his family, Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. The event was from 2-4 p.m.

McKendree United Methodist Church Members met Nov. 25 at 9 a.m. in the sanctuary. The group revived their Christmas spirit and inspiration for the season by the decoration of the Chrismon tree. The symbolism of the gold and white ornaments on the tree is meaningful annually to members and visitors.

Brother Mike Vest is the pastor.
