Loy Greenhill “Mr. Greenhill”

Funeral for Loy Greenhill, “Mr. Greenhill”, 86, was Sun., Feb. 19, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Hartselle Church of Christ with Phillip Hines and Dr. Andrew Dukes officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial was in Hartselle City Cemetery. Mr. Greenhill died on Fri., Feb. 17, 2017 at Huntsville Hospital.  He was born Jan. 12, 1931, in Franklin County to Loy Leonard Greenhill, Sr. and Reba Lois Hester Greenhill. He was the last of six children.

Mr. Greenhill grew up on the family farm near Russellville and attended Cherokee Vocational High School, from which he graduated in May 1949.  Mr. Greenhill served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 after graduation. He was stationed in Salzburg, Austria. When he returned home he married Faye Counce in May of 1953, and their marriage has stood as an example for 63 years. He then enrolled in the Florence State Teacher’s College in 1953 and graduated there in 1956, with a degree in Business Education. He went on to
receive his Master’s Degree in School Administration from the University of Alabama in 1961 and received other degrees from Alabama University as well. He took his first job in education in 1956 at Eva High School teaching business courses and left Eva in July of 1964 to go to Crestline Elementary as an Assistant Principal.  He became principal later that year and served in that position until his retirement in July of 1992.  After retiring he worked at The Learning Tree School Supply Store in Decatur for over 12 years. Mr. Greenhill was one of ten honorees of the inaugural class of the Hartselle Educator Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club for many years and served as the club’s president from 1974-75 and was the treasurer for several terms. He was also a member of the American Legion for many years and was voted Educator of the Year by the organization.

A man of deep faith, He served as a deacon of the Hartselle Church of Christ since the 60’s. He and his wife, Faye, volunteered for 23 years to take care of the landscaping and flowers around the Hartselle Fire Station #2 near Crestline. Mr. Greenhill dedicated his life to serving the Hartselle Community through his long tenure as Principal and his involvement in civic and professional organizations and his church. He was a soft-spoken educator, deeply loved and respected by his former students and faculty members and the city as a whole.

He is survived by his wife, Faye Greenhill, of Hartselle; a daughter, Brenda Greenhill Reynolds (Steve), of Hartselle; a son, Keith Greenhill (Deb), of Hoover and two grandchildren, Rodney Hall (Eileen) and Matt Hall (Brandy).

Pallbearers were Matt Hall, Rodney Hall, Chris Scott, Bobby Fox, Greg Teague, and Jim Wright.

Gene Parker, Charles Balcom and all of the Deacons and Elders of Hartselle Church of Christ will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
