Garnett named finalist in state young farmers contest

A Danville native was named one of four finalists in the Alabama Farmers Federation Discussion Meet competition.

Hunter Garnett, a student at the Samford University Cumberland School of Law, competed in the event, which challenges 15 participants to discuss pre-selected topics in a simulated committee member. The other three finalists selected were Brittany Hill of Pell City, Luke Knight of Wadley and Jerry Allen Newby of Athens. The finalists were each awarded a YETI cooler and will be given the opportunity to compete at the Federation’s annual meeting later this year.

Several other Young Farmer events were held over the weekend. The Excellence in Agriculture event was given to Abbie Keel of Calhoun County. Keel is a kindergarten teacher at White Plains Elementary School in Anniston. Her prizes included a John Deere Zero-Turn Mower sponsored by Dow and a computer package from Valcom/CCS Wireless. The first runners-up for the Excellence in Agriculture award were Landon and Lauren Marks of Leesburg. The second runner-up couple was Daniel and Kim Mullenix of Opelika.

The Alabama Outstanding Young Farm Family award was given to Garrett and Emily Henry and their children Paige, 8, and Mason, 4. Their prizes included a new General Motors pickup truck from Alfa Insurance, an 825i John Deere Gator from Alabama Ag Credit and Alabama Farm Credit and use of a John Deere tractor by local John Deere dealers, totaling $60,000.
