Projects coming to a close for MCS

Most of the Morgan County School System’s projects are coming to a close as the 2015 school year approaches.

The new Priceville High School is currently behind schedule because of the 55-plus days of rain during the construction, according to Superintendent Bill Hopkins Jr. Volkert engineers and the construction team will be pushed to finish the project on time.

“Priceville is behind, and the weather will determine if they are able to finish on time,” Hopkins said. “It’s too early to call now whether or not school will start in the new building, but we have made arrangements for the old building to be available if it’s needed in August. It will all depend on how much it rains in these next few weeks.”

Hopkins said they would wait to make a final decision until probably the last couple weeks before school started.

Construction was going on as usual at Priceville Thursday morning. Hopkins was able to stop by to check on the progress and sit in on a construction meeting.

Falkville High School’s renovation project is going smoothly and very near completion.

“Falkville will be ready on time, and is almost ready to go except for a few minor jobs,” Hopkins said. “There was a walk-through Wed., July 1, and they only saw a few more things that needed to be done.”

The new Morgan County Schools’ Central Office project is ahead of schedule.

“Everything has been going great, and we haven’t run into any problems,” Hopkins said. “As it’s going now, it should be ready ahead of schedule.”

Hopkins said the projects were necessary upgrades that happened to fall into the same year.

“It was just one of those years where we needed the update, and we had the bond money,” Hopkins said. “This is obviously not a traditional year of projects for us, but we are glad to be able to get this all done.”
