Falkville Library sets summer reading program

Falkville Public Library announces plans for their summer reading program commencement July 2 at 2 p.m. at the courtroom in Falkville Town Hall and continuing each Thursday at 2 p.m. for the remainder of July.

Their theme this year is “Every Hero Has A Story.” Plans include John Russell, a military reservist chaplain and missionary, July 2; the Dawson family, who will present a short play about real-life heroes, July 9; Chris Warnick, director of The Carpenter’s Cabinet, July 16; Tammy Adamson, an area EMT, July 23 and Vaughn Lambert, Falkville canine police officer, with his canine partner July 30.

Readers can earn prizes by reading books, magazines or newspapers on their reading level or higher and keeping a verified log of their reading. Each participant will receive small prizes at each session.

They will be making superhero capes for the kids to decorate with small kids decorating theirs at the sessions and older kids taking home a cape decoration competition.

Other craft plans are in the works, and they will have snacks for the kids at the kickoff session July 2. They will plan a big final session with special food for the July 30 session.

All sessions are free and open to kids of all ages. They do request that a parent or other responsible adult caregiver accompany each child.

Additionally, to spice things up for kids this summer, they have begun a storytime each Tuesday at 10 a.m. These are free also, and open to all kids.

They currently are reading the chapter book entitled “From the Notebooks of a Middle School Princess” by Meg Cabot. This story is a new spinoff series from the Princess Diaries series by Meg Cabot. The next story will be voted on by attendees. These storytime sessions are held at the library.

They are running a special offer this summer for readers that is a patron favorite. Readers can choose a bagful of books from the sale closet for $5 per bag. The sale closet is too full and they hope everyone will take advantage of this sale. They have books covering all topics and all genres. Some books are new releases and gift quality, so this would be a perfect opportunity to get a bargain.

Falkville Public Library has plenty to offer patrons. We have 13 Apple computers for free patron use with black-and-white printing available at the units. Color prints are obtainable at the circulation desk. They also offer color copies, faxing services, laminating services, computer tutoring, test proctoring and public meeting rooms.

Their Wi-Fi is available continuously for all users. Patrons can enjoy full access to over 27,000 Ebooks, 25,000 print copies, multiple databases for research, learning, and test prep, homework help, online tutorials and more.

Their hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 8 a.m.-noon, and 1-5 p.m. and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to noon. The library is closed on weekends and major holidays. For more information, please call Jenny at 256-784-5822 during open hours.
